I was in Mr Shepard's World Lit class in 1976 or 77 and I remember his being so funny and entertaining. This world needs people like him, and I think all the other comments make the point that the world is a better-off place for his having passed through it and our lives. Reading these comments, and seeing these names, some of whom I well remember, make me think how enriched we were at Blue Valley to have  wonderful teachers and staff. And Roger Shepard was among my favorites but so too were Bob Gerye, Jan Tanzer, Laura Cotter, Larry Tomlin, Harry MacDonald, Jan Cyr, Mrs. Howell, Phyllis Monyakula. Thank you, folks, for the goodness you brought to my life.

Just heard about  your passing.   We'll miss you coming in the joint for cock-tails! 

We meet Rog decades ago at the Liberty Memorial.   We had fun going to our bars.   When he couldn't rise to the occasion , we still liked watching him do his dance that he did for his school and neighbor boys.   

Rest In Peace Doc Shep!  What an awesome teacher and person you were!  Speech class my senior year was so much fun.  I’m glad to learn you lived to 91 because  Dwyer’s demonstration speech on how to take your underwear off without taking off your pants nearly killed you with laughter!!!  How funny was that!  If my memory is correct, you got much laughter out of our trendy little group of guys called the Beer Warriors....and of course our girlfriends who called themselves the Beer Maidens!!  😂 What a time it was!

Shep was one of my all time favorite teachers. He made such an impression on me, and the care and love he had for his students was apparent. Such a wonderful teacher, later friend, and just a great overall guy. How could anyone who knew him, not love him?

Such  fond memories of Shep during my first high school production.... Our Town. At times direct, or sweetly caustic or even humorously perplexed at our naiveté. No matter the mode, his  dedication and spirit , without doubt sparked my attention and surely countless others. He will be dearly missed. Peace    

I have many fond memories participating in Doc’s class and theatre productions.   I especially recall his story telling and how he could captivate the classroom recalling his personal experiences.   (all while wearing his cap)

Rest in peace.   Even now you’re bringing us back together and teaching.

I’m saddened to hear about Doc Shep’s passing. One of my favorite teachers of all time! His speech class was the first public speaking I ever encountered and little did I know then how much it would impact my life & career. Doc, your kind words and encouragement allowed me to open up and I will forever be grateful. Rest gently, my friend, and know your words and inspiration live on. 

Wow!  So many memories!  I met  many of my good friends in Doc Shep’s speech class. I remember the first speech was the alphabet forwards and backwards, I remember the speech with an accent (Bear’s had us laughing so hard we cried), the speech with all the most common mispronounced words,  and of course the demonstration speech (Darren Dwyer’s was the most famous). 

I am an educator now and I want to say thank you for helping mold many generations of teens into adults. Class of 1985

Doc was one of my favorite high school teachers!   So many great memories in Docs’ class.  BVHS ‘92 

I first met Roger Shepard in 1951 when I entered his classroom at Junction City High School as a freshman where he taught English.  I was fortunate enough to have him again as a senior in his English class.  When I went to KSTC there he was again teaching!  Graduating from college, I began teaching in Shawnee Mission School District and found Roger teaching there!  We laughed about “following each other” in our education careers!  Some years later I became a counselor at Blue Valley High School and guess who was teaching there!  I was privileged to give an address for Roger’s retirement from there.  What can I say:  Shep was an exceptional teacher who was loved and respected by his students and colleagues!  He was a dear friend and an inspiration in my life.
I will always remember his warmth and caring for all whose lives he touched.  He will be sorely missed.

Mr. Shepard was the first teacher to call me Mary instead of Mary Beth and it has stuck all these years!😋

Mr. Shepard was was a wonderful teacher and mentor: wise, witty and kind. And one of the best story tellers I ever met. I am grateful for the opportunities he provided for me to grow in knowledge and as a person. You will be long remembered. Rest well.  

"Old Shep" was the first person I met when I started my teaching career...I was an idealistic, bombastic 20 year old, and he was the seasoned teacher.  Shep and I spent a lot of time talking about life and just things...we had more than a few drinks over the years at the "Strawberry Patch"in the old Ward Pkwy. Center.  We were competitors for theater but always friends...he was the popular teacher, and I was the "hard" teacher.  After I left Blue Valley, we would talk on the phone several times a month...my kids got to know him as they would answer the phone, many times, when he would call.  What memory do I carry forward from him:  Be kind to all.  RIP Old Shep.......I will join you at some point in the future for a few!

Please know you all are in my prayers. Doc was not only an educator he was a teacher that invested his time into his students. I thank him for understanding my quirkiness, his humor, his knowledge and ability to help me think outside the box as well as his encouragement. You will be missed. Roger Shepard was a funny, kind, lovely person. I was in his Speech and World Lit classes and learned so much from him. I offer my sincere condolences to everyone who loved him.

I don’t have many vivid memories of my classes at BVHS but my speech class with Doc was one I’ve recalled many times over the years. He made the class fun and loose which helped a lot with public speaking. A great teacher. 

Mr Shepard was one of those teachers you remember forever. His “cool” teaching style, his skills as a director and a Forensics coach were as much a part of my young adult life as his life lessons still are at age 60.  I was blessed to be among the students who knew him as a mentor, friend, and sage advisor. He will be missed but his legacy lives on.  

I was in his speech and drama classes, and Forensic competition.Best of all were his plays where he gave me character parts that allowed me to come out of my shell, and changed me. Those opportunities gave me huge confidence my whole life.  Class of 76

Probably one of the most enjoyable classes I ever had at BVHS was taught by Mr. Shepard, one of the best teachers ever. Prayers to family and friends.  Rest In Peace.

As much fun as he made speech class and forensics, it was over the top following him around Europe.  Anyone who made that summer pilgrimage knows what I mean.  His wit kept us laughing when the itinerary took an unexpected detour.  The attached photo was taken as we "camped out" for 14 hours at JFK waiting for the airline to find us a replacement for the grounded DC-10 we were supposed to take.

To his family, I am so sorry for your loss.  There is a generation of us who crowded the halls of Blue Valley High School that will carry fond memories of him all our lives.  God's comfort be upon you.

Doc made learning fun. Class was interactive. He had a way of pulling us in. I learned so much and had a great time doing it. Thank you for your passion
