Shirley Mae Jones was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1925 to the late Orville and Icilene Sergeant. She went to be with the Lord on November 11, 2023, following her 98th birthday. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia (Patty) L Bowen, (Ron Bowen) of Gladstone, Missouri; Mark Thomas Jones, (Cheryl Jones) of Blue Springs, Missouri; grandchildren, Kacie Bowen, Michael Jones (Ashley Jones), Jennifer Ireland (Quaid Ireland), and Stephen Jones (Halie Jones); and great-grandchildren, Emily Ireland, Luke Ireland, Owen Jones, Addison Jones, and Andrew Jones.
Shirley attended Westport High School and later worked for New York Life Insurance Company in downtown Kansas City. She married Thomas Carson Jones, Jr. on June 5, 1948, and enjoyed more than sixty-five years of marriage until his death in November 2014. They built their first home in Independence, MO, and later moved to the home they would live in for more than forty years on Cottage Avenue in the Raytown/Kansas City area.
They were members of New Hope Christian Church where she was a part of the women’s fellowship ministry, and later transferred membership to Pebble Creek Assembly of God, then to Odessa First Assembly of God, and eventually in their later years, they came back to New Hope. Shirley was a dedicated Christian servant to her family and church, and was a talented artist, seamstress, decorator, and baker. She made every holiday extra special, especially Christmas and family birthdays. She served as a volunteer Camp Fire leader, and ensured Patty and Mark made it to every music lesson and ball game or school event during their youth. She was also an animal-lover throughout the years. Her pets lived long lives in her care. Her special love of “her birds” outside was also something she enjoyed by feeding and watching them from her kitchen window. Another joy in her later years was following the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs. She faithfully watched every televised game and got to attend her first Royals game at Kauffman Stadium in her 80’s.
Services for Shirley will be held at Newcomers Floral Hills in Raytown on Wednesday, November 15, 2023. Visitation from 1:00-1:30 p.m. Private graveside service, to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to KC Pet Project to honor her and her beloved (and late) rescue cat, Target.
