

Shirley Jean Smocks was born on February 7, 1945, to the union of Robert L. Coleman, Sr. and Louella Coleman, who preceded her in death. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Macedonia Baptist Church. She later joined Prince of Peace Missionary Baptist Church in 1970, where she was a faithful and dedicated member until her death. Shirley was involved in many activities at Prince of Peace. She was President of the MASS Choir, Sunday School Teacher, Church Clerk, assistant to the Senior Pastor, member of the Willing Workers, and faithfully attended Bible Study. Shirley received her early education from D.A. Holmes Elementary. She graduated as valedictorian from Central High School in 1963. She continued her love of education by receiving an Associate of Arts Degree from Longview Community College in 1994 and a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Graceland College in Elementary Education in 2011. Shirley started her business career at Hallmark in the late 60's in the Data Processing department. She then worked for AT&T for 28 years as a Manager in Customer Service until she retired in 1998. Shirley was working as a Special Education Teacher in the Hickman Mills School District at the time of her death. Shirley enjoyed shopping and kept her hair impeccable at all times. Her banana pudding was a church favorite. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandson Larry. Shirley departed this life on Thursday, June 21, 2012, at Menorah Medical Center in Overland Park, Kansas. She was well loved and will truly be missed by her family and friends. Preceding her in death are her sisters, Martha Rabun & Mary Helen Bly; twin sons, Loren & Leroy Smocks who were born to a previous union of marriage to Leroy M. Smocks; and Godson, John Patrick Robertson. She leaves to cherish her memories her son, Shawn Jerman; grandson, Larry Henderson; Godson, James Patrick Robertson; siblings, Marie Dupree-Johnson, Barbara Ann McCrary, Robert Coleman, Jr., May Kathryn Coleman-Robertson, Samuel Walter Coleman, Sr. (Barbara), Mary Jo Edwards-Grigg (Rick), Michael Rabun Coleman, Sr. (Quinetta), Donald Charles Coleman and Lola Michelle Coleman. She also leaves a special friend Glen Christian and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. followed by a Homegoing Celebration at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, June 30, at the Prince of Peace Missionary Baptist Church at 4301 Rev. Dr. Joseph Clark Drive (Wabash Avenue), Kansas City, Missouri 64128, with Reverend Joseph Clark officiating. Interment in Mount Moriah Cemetery South, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64131.
