Visitation will be held on Saturday March 2, between 9:30-11am, with a memorial service following at 11am, at Ascension Lutheran Church (4900 Blue Ridge Blvd, Kansas City, MO). Pastor Jeff Kuddas will officiate. Memorials may be directed to Preferred Hospice of Lexington, MO, or at the family’s discretion to various church organizations.
Thomas Leonard Setley was born on February 16, 1934, in Kansas City, to John Martin and Martha Agnes (Snyder) Setley. Although his family moved during his childhood, he grew up mainly in the Kansas City area, settling in Grain Valley. He graduated from Grain Valley High School in 1952. Tom served in the United States Navy during the Korean War in the quartermaster and postmaster divisions, between the years of 1952 to 1956.
On September 24, 1960, Tom was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Bredehoft, and were together for 63 years. Together they had three daughters, Monica Elaine (Yokeley), Susan Elizabeth (Olmer) and Anne Eileen (Hoffman).
Tom was employed for Marion Laboratories and later Servomation in the maintenance department until his retirement. He was a former member of Ascension Lutheran Church, being a founding member of the congregation. Tom was very involved with the church, serving as an elder and trustee. He was currently a member of Faith Lutheran in Richmond, Missouri. He also enjoyed playing cards with the church pitch groups. Tom loved tinkering, coming up with inventions to make life easier for family and friends. He was especially good at machines, there was not a small engine he could not repair. Tom enjoyed being with family and friends, telling stories, and playing with the grandchildren.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents and one brother John Martin, Jr.
He is survived by his wife Shirley Setley, and their three daughters, Monica (Terry) Yokeley, Susan (Andy) Olmer, and Anne (Scott) Hoffman, three grandchildren, Matthew (Nichelle) Yokeley, Kalynn (Josh) Jefford, and Tylor (Heather) Grissell, ten greatgrandchildren, one sister Yvonne Warner, a nephew Gary Warner and niece Nancy Warner, and a brother-in-law Roger (Elaine) Bredehoft, and nephew Michael (Plarenta) Bredehoft.
A graveside service will occur Saturday, March 2, 2024 from 1:30 PM to 2:00 PM at Floral Hills Cemetery, 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64133.
