Trellis was born March 26, 1926 in Foil, Missouri, to Charles and Emma Turner. Trellis married Gladys Wilkinson on February 1, 1945. Shortly after their marriage, Trellis was drafted by the U. S. Army where he served in South Korea. Trellis and Gladys settled in Kansas City in 1959. Trellis’ highest accomplishment was the business that carried his name for 30 years, Turner Construction. He, his sons, and crew built handcrafted homes and Trellis became one of the top builders in Kansas City and surrounding areas. The company built hundreds of condominiums, single family homes, and town houses in areas such as Hallbrook Farms, Indian Heights, and Mission Hills.
Always hardworking, Trellis was a resourceful and independent thinker, excelling in the many creative projects he took on. An avid outdoorsman, he loved to spend time on his beloved acreage in Miami County, KS. His reverence for nature was evident in the time he spent on his land planting crops, building ponds and maintaining quail habitats. In his later years, his favorite pastime was working on his bobcat around his property.
Strong willed to the end, Trellis fought hard for his health after being diagnosed with cancer. Many thanks and much gratitude goes out from his family to his doctors Dr Peter Chu and Dr Chris Geha, and the staff from Heartland Hospice who supported him in his battle, especially nurse Amy Sydney and aide Jared Hager.
Trellis was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Gladys (Wilkinson) Turner, son Brian K. Turner, infant daughter Sybil I. Turner, and sister Naomi Walker. He is survived by his sister Loraine Barber of Beebe, Arkansas, his son Dencil Turner of Cleveland, Missouri, and his daughter Sandra Terry of Kansas City, Missouri. He is also survived by three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
