Mike attended Shawnee Mission High School in Kansas, and later the Electronic Computer Programming Institute (ECPI). Mike worked with mainframe computer software as a skilled technician and systems programmer. This was a vocation he sincerely enjoyed; he had always been a problem solver and a deep thinker. He thrived on complex software issues and said, “Of course it’s difficult. It’s the difficult that makes it fun!”
Mike was a steadfast member of the Catholic Church, and he converted to Catholicism in the 1980's. He became a member of the Knights of Columbus more recently, and he attained his Fourth Degree in that Order. Later in life, he greatly enjoyed participating in and helping with a variety of charitable events connected to St. Mark’s, the Knights, and other local organizations.
Mike was a student of Tae Kwon Do in the 1990s at the Gautreaux Martial Arts Center, along with his wife and children. He earned his first-degree black belt in the late 1990s, and he participated in tournaments as competitor, judge, and general volunteer. His presence was great encouragement to other adults in the program. Mike played the drums, the piano, and both alto and baritone saxophones.
Mike was preceded in death by his brother, Dan Mayo, and by his parents, Joe and JoAnne Mayo.
Mike is survived by his wife, Megan, and their children Rachael Mayo (unmarried), Michelle Zastrow (with husband Dan), Kelly Stoll (with husband Joey), Thomas “TJ” Mayo (with wife Bethany), and Erin Noah (with husband Mike). He is survived by his younger sister, Debbie Dooley (with husband Jack). He is survived by grandchildren Lillian, Arianna, and Penelope Noah, and Gwendolyn, Heidi, and Brandon Stoll.
A rosary service for Michael will be held Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at 4:30 PM at St. Mark Catholic Church, 3736 S. Lee's Summit Rd., Independence, Missouri 64055, with a visitation following until 8:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will occur Thursday, June 19, 2025, at the church followed by a committal service at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery, 7601 Blue Ridge Blvd., Kansas City, Missouri 64138. In lieu of flowers, family suggests memorial gifts to Sister of Saint Francis of the Holy Eucharist or St. Mark Parish.
