

Carol Darlene Merifield Sigler died on Friday, August 19, 2022, at 87. Carol was born on January 3, 1935, to Letha and Fordes Merifield at the Fort Wayne, Indiana, hospital. Her family, Mom, Dad, and older Sister Gloria, moved from Harlan, IN, to Edon, Ohio, where her Dad sold Watkins Products in the county. Carol and Gloria went to school in Edon, as did younger brother Jim.
Carol's beautiful singing voice brought great joy to many throughout her life. At an early age, she and three friends sang in a talent scout show in Toledo, Ohio. The quartet Edon-Aires formed singing at many Barbershop Quartet Shows in the area.
After high school, Carol worked as an office secretary at Aero Corporation in Bryan, Ohio. She met and married Carl Johnston in 1952. In 1955 they moved to San Diego, California, where she worked as Personal Secretary for Mr. Elser of Elser Elevator Company.
Again, Carol and three new friends formed a new quartet. The Cal Four Notes sang in the Sweet Adaline chorus and performed in many shows, winning multiple awards. In addition, she created music arrangements and choreography for the Sweet Adaline quartets and choruses, fulfilling her musical passion.
Carol and her Sister Gloria were very close. Carol became "a second mom," as they fondly called her, to Gloria's daughters, Susan and Sandy. They held an extraordinary, loving bond and friendship throughout the years with Carol.
Carol met Tom Sigler and married in 1971, in Houston, Texas. Tom had two daughters, Jennifer Lynn and Linda Lee. Carol loved pouring into their lives in her role as a stepmom and later became Grandma Carol to their five sons. The gift of Carol's love enriched Jennifer and Linda’s lives in many ways.
During their 46 years of marriage, Carol was a devoted wife supporting Tom in all his endeavors and taking on many leadership roles in her undertakings. One such position was serving the ARCS Foundation, a nationally recognized nonprofit organization started and run entirely by women who boost American leadership and aid advancement in science and technology.
Carol's love of music continued in Houston. In 1980, she joined the chorus, Deci-Belles, serving as their choreographer and costume designer. In addition, Carol sang bass in A Taste of Harmony, a professional quartet from the Deci-Belles. She shared beautiful music with them for over 30 years bringing joy to countless people.
Carol’s loving spirit came from her faith in Jesus Christ. She and Tom attended Chapelwood United Methodist Church serving in many areas and also attending Bible study for many years.
Carol was preceded in death by her husband Tom Sigler, her Sister Gloria, her husband Lavon Smith, and her stepdaughter Jennifer Lynn Harper. She is survived by her brother, James and wife, Martha Merifield, sons, David and James; nieces, Susan and her husband, Tom Wentzel, son Travis; Sandra and her husband, Tom Walker, sons Nathan and Landon and daughter Lindsay; her stepdaughter, Linda and her husband, Bob Withers; son-in-law Gerald Harper; grandchildren, Andrew Harper and his wife, Cali; Thomas Harper and his wife, Ginny; Luke Withers and his wife, Taylor; Joshua Withers and his wife, Grace; Tim Withers and his wife, Hayley; and Great grandchildren, Sophia Harper, Philip Harper, Elissa Harper, June Withers, and Margot Withers.
Carol was a beautiful, loving woman bringing affection and joy to all who knew her. She loved her family dearly, actively participating in all of their lives. All will miss Carol's zest for life, her tender heart, and her beautiful soul, but the blessings of her life that she so intentionally sowed will go on for many generations.
A service of celebration of her life will be held on Friday, September 9, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Chapelwood United Methodist Church, 11140 Greenbay Street, Houston, in the Chapel.
