Gyneth Mae Hauter, born January 29, 1928, in St. Albans, Vermont, died on January 30, 2025, at the age of 97. Raised on a farm in Montgomery, Vermont, she developed an incredible work ethic and a deep love for animals, especially her cherished horse, Prince.
In 1947, Gyneth moved to New Jersey, where she worked as a seamstress in a factory in Asbury Park. She was also an active member of the Monmouth Shore Points Motorcycle Club in Neptune, serving as the club secretary. It was through this club that she met the love of her life, Robert G. Hauter. The two were married in August 1955 in Oakhurst, New Jersey, and built a beautiful life together. They designed and constructed their home in Wayside, a place filled with love, laughter, and warmth for nearly six decades. Their marriage was a testament to love and commitment, lasting almost 58 years until Bob’s passing in 2013.
Gyneth was best known for her exceptional cooking and baking, with her chocolate chip cookies being a family favorite. She found joy in gardening, sewing, and later in life, completing sticker-by-number books. She had a nurturing spirit and even raised baby raccoons, including one special companion named Ben. Her home was always open to friends and family, and she formed deep, lasting friendships with neighbors she cherished for more than 50 years.
Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had a special bond with her sister, Helen, speaking daily and visiting whenever possible. Gyneth’s life was marked by kindness, generosity, and a true servant’s heart, always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.
Gyneth was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert G. Hauter; her son, Robert D. Hauter; her parents, Donald H. Garrow and Lillian (Greene) Garrow Frazier; her sister, Janice Marston; and her brothers, James Garrow and Edward Garrow.
She is survived by her daughter, Lori G. Hauter-O’Dowd, and her husband, Al O’Dowd, of Katy, Texas; her son, Scott A. Hauter, and his wife, Catherine, of Lovingston, Virginia; her grandchildren, Eric Mulder and his wife, Jennifer; Jaime Coulter and her husband, Nathan; Alex Hauter; and Olivia Nash; as well as her great-grandchildren, Garrett McCart, Averie Mulder, Audrey Mulder, Robert Coulter, and Archie Coulter. She also leaves behind her beloved sister, Helen Ashton, her sister-in-law, Dorothy Hauter, and several nieces and nephews who will cherish her memory.
Gyneth’s legacy of love, resilience, and generosity will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched.
