Judy was born on August 15, 1951 in Dallas, Texas, to Richard Jerrell Dickens and Evelyn Juanita Bradshaw Dickens. Judy attended Thomas Jefferson High School in Dallas, Texas. She graduated from Baylor University in 1973 with a bachelor’s degree in Education. Judy married her soulmate, Theron Pickering, on August 12, 1972. The couple welcomed three children, Shelley (1975), Josh (1980) and Christopher (1982), who were her pride and joy. Judy had a long and fulfilling career as an educator, teaching kindergarten and 3rd grade early in her career, and then 6th grade for a large majority of her career. She taught at a number of local schools within the Katy and Spring Branch school districts. While her family lived in Jakarta, Indonesia, she also taught at the international school there. Judy loved teaching and poured her heart and soul into her students and her subject matters. Her students loved her, and she was affectionately known by them as “Mrs. Pick.”
Judy loved to travel and spend time with her family. Judy and Theron were blessed to live overseas twice: in Sydney, Australia from 1981-1984, and in Jakarta, Indonesia from 1987-1990. During their residence abroad, the family enjoyed memorable vacations to various places, including Austria, Singapore, and Hawaii. Judy spent her retirement years quilting and loving on her seven grandchildren.
Judy was a remarkable woman with strong Christian values. She was truly loved by anyone who had the privilege to know her. Her kind heart, devotion to friends and everlasting patience were a testament to her strong character. Most of all, Judy was a truly selfless person. She always put others before herself and loved with her whole heart. She will truly be missed by her family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her father, Richard Jerrell Dickens; her mother, Evelyn Juanita Bradshaw Dickens; and her brother, Calvin Wesley Dickens.
Judy is survived by her spouse, Theron Pickering; her children, Shelley Lowe (Glen), Josh Pickering (Kendall) and Christopher Pickering (Melanie); her sister, Jane Hughes (Richard); her grandchildren, Connor Lowe, Jisoo Pickering, John Pickering, Makay Pickering, Joanna Pickering, Brecker Pickering, Jackson Pickering and Caymann Lowe; and many other family members.
