January 21, 1930 - August 6, 1922
Lorraine F. Jeffrey, 92, met Jesus face-to-face in the early morning hours of Saturday, August 6. She was at home surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Hugs, kisses, love, and plenty of memories were about the air.
Lorraine was born on January 21, 1930 in The Bronx, New York to Robert and Emily Johnson and was their only child. She graduated from Walton High School, New York with thoughts of becoming an Interpreter (German) for the U.N. someday. The boy across the street swayed her in another direction and on September 6, 1948, she and Doug started a life together. Lorraine and Doug went on to have 8 children and a life full of happiness, sadness, and chaos, with a house full of children.
In 1970 Doug and Lorraine decided to leave their home state of New York and try the sunshine of the state of Florida. It was here that Lorraine found her true calling, Nursing. She started Broward County Vocational School in 1975, the year her youngest child started full day school. During her time in school she worked every other weekend as a CNA at Broward Community Hospital, Ft. Lauderdale. She was hard working and dedicated to being the best she could be. Lorraine graduated from Nursing School as an LPN on March 31, 1977, the same day as her sixth child finished her senior year of High School. Her family could not have been prouder of her and her accomplishments!
Lorraine’s career continued at Broward Community Hospital as a Medical/Surgical floor nurse until a move to Houston, TX took place in July of 1979, Once in Houston she worked at Sam Houston Hospital in Med/Surg until they closed their doors and she was moved to Spring Branch Memorial Hospital. Lorraine was an excellent nurse and was loved by everyone who worked with her, along with all of her patients. Her integrity for a job well done, her care and compassion when working with the sick, and her ability to be a team player made her a true asset to 4E at Sam Houston Hospital. One of her son-in-laws (John) had the privilege of working at Sam Houston at the same time and he shared how she was such an example to the student nurses that came through and to all of the staff. He feels blessed to have seen her in this way. After 20 years of nursing Lorraine retired from the hospital, but worked per diem for a local urologists office. She did this for another 6 years until Doug retired at the age of 75.
Lorraine, like her husband, Doug, never met a stranger. She could talk to anyone and always made them feel special. She was always referred to as sweet, kind, friendly, stylish, and a woman who had a very strong faith. Her faith and hope in adversity was admired by many. Every one of her children’s friends whom met her, fell in love with her, and she made them feel like family. Lorraine had an impeccable fashion sense and always dressed well, never forgetting the right shoes, purse, and accessories, they were a must! We, as her children, always thought our mother looked so cute when she would arrive in her outfit…..a tiny woman with a big sense of fashion!! We will certainly miss this!!
Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Douglas; her parents; daughters Gayle Marie, Maureen Frances, and Margaret Mary; son, Donald Francis; son-in-laws, Alan T King and Charles A Riedl; and grandson, Dustin ‘Shayne’ Jeffrey. She is survived by daughters Lynn (John) Yarusso of Katy, TX, Patricia Corriden of Katy, TX, and Janet King of Austin, TX; son, Robert (Kristin) Jeffrey of Folsom, CA; 23 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Her children love her immensely, are thankful God chose her as their earthly mother, have memories that will always be cherished, and she will be held close to their hearts in many years to come!
