Mom and retired energy trader, Melodie Lu’s love of life did not come to an end upon her death. Melodie passed away on May 25, 2021 at the age of 39 from an undiagnosed neurological disease after having overcome cancer in 2018 and lived with hearing loss since 2020.
Melodie completed her double major in Computational and Applied Mathematics and Cognitive Sciences at Rice University. After having worked at BP and Vitol and traveled the world professionally, she gave birth to her miracle baby Amelie. Melodie’s pride was in her ability to create deep and lasting bonds with friends and family, and being thoughtful in everything she did including travel, personalized Christmas and birthday cards, and learning languages (e.g. Spanish, Italian and ASL). During the pandemic, she took on the role of pre-school teacher and guided her daughter through numerous crafts, science experiments and virtual pre-schools.
The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Melodie. She loved eating fries and pizza and watching movies at home with family. She was a fighter and never gave up against all odds. In her first week at the hospital prior to death, she and the rehabilitation doctor made a deal that she would celebrate her full recovery from loss of motor skills with a meal of fries with the doctor. She will be missed, but forever remembered. Melodie is survived by her husband, Brian; daughter Amelie; and her parents Jenny and I-Le Lu.
Special thanks goes to the Methodist Hospital doctors who worked tirelessly to find a diagnosis, the West Pavilion Methodist Hospital rehabilitation team, for being the angels who gave her hope of a full recovery, and the Houston Hospice who brought her peace and rest in her final days of life.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Melodie’s name to any one of the following organizations that provided Melodie support in her times of need:
