Nancy W. Conner (89) of Houston, Texas, formerly of Palm City, Florida, Woodbury, Connecticut, Osterville, Massachusetts and Grosse Pointe, Michigan, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2020. Born in Providence, Rhode Island on January 22, 1931 to Lewis E. and Helen F. Potter, she graduated from Cranston High, Becker Junior College, and Central Connecticut State University with a B.S. in Business Administration after attending the University of Michigan.
Nancy is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Delbert S. Conner, her high school sweetheart. For 30 years, they teamed up to teach youth bible study. Nancy’s years were also spent in raising three daughters and focusing on volunteerism, teaching English as a second language, serving the handicapped, re-cataloging medical and church libraries, helping others find their forever home as a real estate broker, and being a pastoral care visitor for hospice.
In the 1970’s when Hospice was introduced to the U.S., Nancy spoke to community groups in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, explaining the concept and subsequently becoming part of the Hospice Team with the Hartford Waterbury Visiting Nurse Association--recruiting and training volunteers and continuing her bereavement pastoral care focus.
She is survived by her three daughters (Cheryl Lyn Conner, North Carolina; Lyn Conner Widlaski, Texas; & Kristen McGrath, Connecticut), seven grandchildren (Lauren Rogers, Meredith Widlaski, Adam & Emily Conner-Simons, Lucy, Harry & Phoebe McGrath) and four great-grandsons (Conner & Wilson Hughes; Hudson & Graham Rogers).
Nancy will be remembered as a passionate lover of her grandchildren and great-grandsons, an ever curious and experienced traveler, a creator of many beautiful homes, a voracious and expansive reader, and a gracious and welcoming hostess. She will also be missed for her Belgian waffles, apple pies and maids of honor cupcakes!
Burial will be at Quidnessett Memorial Cemetery in North Kingstown, Rhode Island. If you feel inclined, please consider making a donation in Nancy’s memory to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation (www.macular.org).
