Born on December 14, 1945, in Portland, Oregon, Norma was the cherished daughter of John and Willie Higgins. She grew up alongside her brother, Daniel, and sister, Bernice, forming lifelong bonds with her family and friends. After graduating from Portland State University with a degree in Education, she followed her passion for teaching and moved to California, where she began her career as an elementary school teacher.
In California, Norma met Richard, and the two were married in 1969. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Norma dedicated her entire career to teaching within the same school district, a testament to her love for both her students and colleagues. She formed deep and lasting friendships with many of her fellow educators, connections that remained strong even beyond her retirement.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Richard; her loving son, David; and her daughter-in-law, Katherine. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Willie, as well as her brother, Daniel, and sister, Bernice. Though she experienced loss, she maintained close friendships with many of her childhood friends from Oregon and formed meaningful relationships within the Multiple Sclerosis community, a cause that was very dear to her heart.
Outside of her professional life, Norma found joy in gardening, reading, and solving crosswords. She was passionate about supporting others affected by Multiple Sclerosis and was actively involved in the community with others facing similar challenges.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation (www.msfocus.org).
Norma will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her, but her legacy will continue to inspire those she touched.
