Paul Dougherty, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away leaving behind a legacy of loyalty, generosity, and unwavering love for his family. Born on August 17, 1957, in Houston, Texas, Paul was the son of Kenneth Walton Dougherty Sr. and Jacquelyn Marie Dougherty. He grew up alongside his siblings Kenneth Jr., Robert, and Carol, and graduated from Bellaire High School in 1975. He went on to attend Texas Tech University in Lubbock, where he built the foundation for what would become a life of purpose, passion, and service to others.
Paul’s career began in his family’s business, City Appliance, before moving into the oilfield industry. He eventually found his calling in electronic and technology sales, working with respected companies such as Toshiba, Goldstar, Dell, Fujitsu, and ultimately retiring from Xerox. Known for his integrity and magnetic personality, Paul was consistently a top salesman, earning nominations for the President’s Award for surpassing sales goals. His leadership extended beyond the professional world, where he rose through the ranks of the Deguello Motorcycle Club from prospect to Road Captain, Vice President, and eventually President.
In 1980, Paul married the love of his life, Brenda Nell Dougherty. Together for 45 years, they built a life rooted in mutual respect and unwavering devotion. Their marriage, born from a blind date at a Christmas party, was a true partnership. Paul’s commitment to Brenda was evident in everything he did. They raised two children, Kenneth Walton Dougherty III and Brittany Michelle DeGhelder, and were blessed with five grandchildren: Blake, Brenna, Colton, Summer, and Autumn. Paul was immensely proud of his family and made it his life’s mission to protect and care for them.
Affectionately known as “Planterman Paul,” he found great joy in woodworking, especially crafting charming animal planters out of fence pickets. He had a deep love for the outdoors and spent countless hours tending to Skull Creek Ranch, the property he and Brenda purchased in 2016. Whether mowing, maintaining bluebird habitats, or harvesting honey from his bee hives, Paul was most at peace surrounded by nature. He also had a fondness for motorcycles, both riding and collecting memorabilia, and was a longtime member of the Deguello Motorcycle Club, where he was highly respected.
Paul had a passion for music, especially classic rock, and was a skilled harmonica player who could effortlessly play “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” A fan of action movies, Andy Griffith reruns, and old westerns, he enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. He was known for his quick wit, eloquence, and the remarkable ability to deliver a heartfelt speech with no preparation. A true storyteller, he could turn strangers into friends within minutes and was always ready to lend a helping hand, often quite literally giving the shirt off his back.
Those who knew Paul describe him as selfless, thoughtful, and fiercely loyal. He loved big, lived with purpose, and cherished every moment spent with his wife, children, grandchildren, and dog, Sparty. His warmth, laughter, and strength of character touched everyone he met. To know him was to love him, and he will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to be part of his life.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Paul’s memory in one of the following ways: make a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to support pediatric cancer research, contribute to the ASPCA in support of animal welfare, or plant a tree in his memory to continue his love for nature and the outdoors.
