Joseph’s Hospital in Downtown Houston while his father was serving in the U.S. Marine
Corps in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He attended school in Houston and graduated
from Spring Branch High School in 1963. He attended South Texas Junior College and
studied architecture at the University of Houston.
Ronnie met Valerie Lynn Johnson while they both attended Landrum Junior High. They were
married August 14, 1965, at St. Timothy’s United Methodist Church. Ronnie started his
career as a draftsman for Houston Lighting and Power. Over the years he worked for a few
engineering companies including Fluor and Bechtel. He and Valerie also owned a Meineke
Discount Muffler Shop in Austin for a short time, and a home repair/remodel business in
Katy.
Ronnie was an avid animal lover and always owned at least one dog. He usually had a
tropical fish tank and a model train in the works. He enjoyed tinkering with the latest
personal computer technology, exploring caves, and watching sci-fi and spy movies. Some
of his other favorite past times were trains, hot air balloons, amusement and waterparks.
He enjoyed sharing all of these with his family. He also took pleasure in spending time in
Bandera, Texas at the Pounds family ranch while growing up and as an adult, and he looked
for the cave he was told about every visit. He supported his children in many activities like
scouting, archery, swim team, and church activities. His children will always fondly
remember his unique sense of humor. He was full of “dad jokes” that he shared with
everyone.
Ronnie is preceded in death by his parents, mother Helen Pettit Mead; father Eldon Lee
Pounds; step-father Earl Mead; step-mother Edna Pounds; and sister Susie Peters. He is
survived by his wife of almost 59 years, Valerie; their three children and families, Ronald
Lee Pounds Jr. (Little Ronnie), wife Linda, daughter Kristin Lee Pounds, Jeremy Thibodeaux
and children Oliver, Levi, and Kora, son Robert Eldon Pounds; Veronica Pounds Williams,
husband Mitch, son Wyatt, fiancé Hannah Stefani, daughter Weslee and husband Tanner
Davie; Vanessa Pounds Hubbard, husband Brian, daughter Jillian and Jason Woods, son
Brian Jr., son Cadan; sister Barbara and husband Tom Garner, and sister Carolyn Caffey;
and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, other family members and dear friends
who he would want to live their lives to the fullest.
He struggled with various health issues for over 20 years. His family is thankful for the
many caregivers and well-wishers who cared for and checked on him. Many friendships
were made over time. We are especially grateful for the staff at Caydance Assisted Living
and Bayou City Hospice in Katy.
To honor Ronnie’s memory a service will be held at Katy Funeral Home at 23350 Kingsland
Blvd Katy, TX 77494. There will be breakfast and visitation from 9 to 11am. Following
visitation, a service will be held at 11am conducted by Reverend William Thornton. At 1pm
a graveside service will be held at Forrest Park Lawndale Cemetery at 6900 Lawndale
Street, Houston, TX 77023.
