Now, these pictures are beginning to represent something else for me. Instead of longing for him to still be with us, I'm starting to appreciate that he lived a wonderful life filled with wonderful people. Romans 8:6 says, “For the mind set on the flesh is hostile towards God, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace.” Rather than focusing on his absence from our Earth, I hope to celebrate his reunion with the Lord while keeping the memories of his faith, joy, and love in our hearts until we meet again in heaven.

I remember that he was a man of love. He drove me to school and daycare right up until the day when made an unfortunate dent in our garage door and could no longer physically drive. He always tried to take care of others, motioning for me to eat first when there was food on a plate the moment I walked into the room. When he lived in Memorial alone with my grandmother, I would come to visit and I could just see his face light up. He would always tell me “”. He even told me I would become the President of the United States. Then he also told me I would be the First Lady. Hope he’ll be okay with none of the above. In all seriousness, I knew he loved me so much. He loved all his grandchildren. He loved his entire family. 
Now that's what I remember. But beyond all this remembrance, I've been able to reflect. I've noticed that my grandfather knew how to love God, love joy, and love others, even as he lost parts of who he was. Although they may seem like simple human capabilities, throughout all these years, they always remained constant in his life, which is a reminder of how powerful love is. I hope that one day I can learn to be as faithful as he was. I hope that I can learn to appreciate joy as much as he did and shine my own light for the joy of others. I hope that I can learn to love as deeply as he did. Looking back on my life with my grandpa, I realize how big of a privilege it was to have him in my life like that. It was amazing that I got to be so close to him for so much of my own life, let alone live with him. In his passing, I may mourn his death, but I am also glad for the lessons he has taught me.

Hello my name is Helen Choi.
At first, looking back at old photos of my Grandfather was hard. In these pictures, I could see how healthy he was both physically and mentally. These pictures captured the time before his dementia, before his strokes. Although I was too little to remember what he was like when healthy, I’m thankful for what I do remember about him.
I remember that he was a man of God. Even with his dementia and lowered mental awareness, I remember seeing him on the couch, reading the Bible every single day. I remember him watching that one Korean Christian TV channel for hours on end. Most of the time, he was unaware whenever we were in prayer as a family, which was a little heart wrenching. But it was more uplifting to see his passion and faith when he was the one asked to pray in family dinners or worship sessions. He was so passionate, in fact, he'd be yelling just a little bit too loudly and doing that thing where people spit when they talk, but all for the grace of God, right?
I also remember that he was a man who knew joy. Sometimes we would be sitting at a restaurant and suddenly his napkin obsession would reveal itself. He’d just grab a whole bunch and stuff it in his pocket: all we could do was laugh. He may not have understood why we were laughing, but he’d always laugh right along with us. Even without knowing, he was the one providing us with laughter. I like to think he found joy in seeing his family happy. Well, I guess he also found joy in his 99 Ranch bakery, which was happily devoured for many of his meals. He could find joy in the simplest of things.
