A man called Ed. He was born William Edward Worsham on August 17, 1925. He was such a force of nature that I'm sure the earth quaked a bit on the day he was born. He was born into poverty and left home at a very early age. He was big for his age, had a gift for gab that helped him convince employers he was old enough to work and ultimately to join the navy. He viewed obstacles as challenges, was never afraid of hard work or getting his hands dirty. He was always willing to learn or to lend a helping hand. He was a self-made, self-taught man. He was a hunter, a fisherman and loved being outdoors although I believe it was more about the camaraderie of family, friends and nature that excited him more than the actual hunt or catch. He was a man's man but his 'Kenny Rogers' look never failed to catch the eye of the ladies.
He considered John Wayne a good American and I think he patterned his life after him. He was a man of many talents with a never ending bucket list. He was famous for running out of gas because he believed that 'empty' meant there was always enough left to get you where you're going -- which made it a bit frightening when he decided to take flying lessons. He had a zest for life and made the most of every moment. He never met a stranger and was the first to step up for a friend. Once you met him, you never forgot him and you never had to wonder what he was thinking because he always spoke his mind. He was a mentor to many and had a defining influence on many lives. He made a difference. He could capture and entertain an audience with tales of his life experiences and leave you wanting more. He was a proud and loving Father. He loved his children unconditionally and raised them with tough love and a strong hand. He instilled in them the importance of integrity, responsibility, honor and respectability. He taught them that your word is your bond, to think for themselves and to stand up for their beliefs and never follow the crowd. He considered his children to be his greatest contribution to a better world. There was nothing he wouldn't do for his children and he left them with a legacy of love and respect. He was many things to many people and known by many names but the one that brought the biggest smile to his face was "Paw". Any man that says "after 19 seconds of talking about your grandchildren, there is nothing left to say" never met Ed. He may not have walked on the moon but to those whose lives he touched, he left an indelible footprint on their hearts. He lived by the philosophy that life is short, do what you can with what you have from where you are and make the most of every moment. One of his favorite sayings was from Sachel Paige "Never look back, something might be gaining on you". He blazed his own path and left a trail for others to follow. He lived a long, full life and he did it 'his way'.He was loved by many and respected by all. He made a difference.
To some, he was just a man but to those that knew and loved him, he was the world. He will be missed but will live on in the hearts of those that love him.
