Bernard W. Hall 89, a longtime resident of Spofford, NH, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 31, 2018, at the Cheshire Medical Center / Dartmouth Hitchcock, Keene, following an acute decline in his health.
Bernard was born in Brattleboro, Vermont, on November 2, 1928, the second of four sons to Lyn and Mary (Ring) Hall. He grew up in Dummerston, VT and was a graduate of Brattleboro High School.
Bernard proudly served his country, first in the National Guard as a civilian occupation radio operator. He was activated into the Army and received the Army Occupation Medal for his service in Germany, and was honorably discharged.
In his lifetime, Bernard enjoyed employment in farming, construction, woodworking and manufacturing. He also served his community as a volunteer with the Spofford Fire Department in the 1970’s.
A first marriage on June 3, 1953 to Marjorie Hatt, raising two children, the late Bruce R. Hall of Kenai, Alaska, and Diane M. Hall of Westmoreland, NH; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A second marriage on December 24, 1982 to Thelma Leahy, sharing 36 years filled with family gatherings; gardening; woodworking; home projects; and aimless drives on the back roads of Vermont. Bernard was embraced and loved by Thelma’s family and they were the recipients of his wit, wisdom and sound advice.
As his health declined, life activities adjusted, filling his days with traditional country music; FRD/Animal Planet Programs; and daily bird watching with good friend and keeper of his birds, Charlie.
Bernard looked forward to phone calls and visits from family and friends; hearing of his son’s Alaskan hunting adventures; his nephew’s latest building projects; or reminiscing of the good old days with his cousin.
Bernard deeply appreciated the love and care of his step-daughter, Donna, and of family and friends, allowing both Thelma and him to live out their lives at their beloved Spofford home.
In respecting Bernard’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or services. Burial will be private.
For those who wish, donations may be made in his memory to the Spofford Fire Department, PO Box 138, 9 Pontiac Drive, Spofford, NH 03462-0138.
