Charlie was born in Brattleboro, Vermont on June 16, 1959, the son of Alice (Vento) and Charles E. Wheeler, Sr., and lived in both Winchester and Keene, New Hampshire.
As a resident of Keene, he became well known for riding his very distinctive and unique tricycle which was fitted on the back with a large basket. He’d be seen peddling along Marlboro Street, making his way around the corner onto Main Street with the goal of returning with a full load of recyclables he collected along the way and throughout downtown. Years ago, he could also be seen at Wheelock Park; he became a unique sight for all to smile at and watch. Though handicapped, he kept up with his "hobby" for as long as his legs could keep peddling. The mischievous glint in his eye along with his smile endeared many to him instantly. He was thrilled and so pleased when The Keene Sentinel published a photograph of him peddling his tricycle downtown.
Charlie eventually had to give up his "home" to reside at Westwood now Alpine Healthcare. On warm sunny days, he could be seen sitting in the sun at the front entrance of Alpine, thanks to staff who would dress him up for the weather and take the time to let him enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. Until the day he passed away, he never gave up hope of going back "home", hoping he could ride his tricycle once again, despite his disabilities. He greatly enjoyed Alpine’s outdoor barbecues.
He is survived by the community of Alpine Healthcare and their dedicated nursing, rehab techs and caregivers, as well as the maintenance crew, and the culinary and administrative staff.
Charlie will be laid to rest in the Monadnock View Cemetery, Park Avenue, Keene, on December 12, 2025, at 11:00am. Friends and acquaintances are welcome to attend his graveside service to be officiated by Lucy Duchaney, Spiritual Counselor at Bayada Hospice of Brattleboro, VT.
His gravestone will be engraved with a replica of his "tricycle" and the words "Smiling forever – I’m home!".
