He was born in Staten Island, NY on October 6, 1944, the son of Edwin H. and Ruth (Bradshaw) Smith. The family moved to Mountainside, NJ when he was a teenager, and he graduated from Gov. Livingston Regional High School in Berkeley Heights, NJ. He went on to complete a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Northwest Missouri State University.
In 1968, Ward married his high school sweetheart, Helen Raymond, and in 1975, they moved to New Hampshire when he went into business as co-owner of Cheshire Airways. In 1976, they bought a farm in Surry, and as they moved in he said to her "I want to name this Stillwater Farm, because I feel that the Lord led us here," a reference to Psalm 23 and a reflection of his deep faith in Jesus Christ. Eventually, working around his farm became his favorite activity, and he could always be found tinkering on all kinds of machinery. He loved raising his many animals including chickens, turkeys, pigs, beef cattle, and draft horses. He had a special fondness for his dogs and especially his cats.
He also enjoyed bee keeping, golfing, boating and fishing, and he was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 927 of Keene. Visiting with good friends was one of his favorite pastimes, but most of all was the special time shared with his family, especially his grandchildren whom he always loved to tease.
He will be greatly missed by Helen, his wife of 48 years; his daughters, Sandra Pappajohn and her husband, Timothy, of Candia, NH, and Rebecca Russo and her husband, Aaron, of Surry; three grandchildren, Jillian Russo, Anastasia Russo, Nathaniel Russo; and niece, Catherine Marie Mayer and her husband, David Callaway, of Rockwall, TX.
Family and friends are invited to call on Tuesday evening from 5:00 to 7:00PM at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene, NH. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at 10:00AM at Crossway Church, 28 Arch Street, Keene, NH. Burial will follow in the Village Cemetery, Village Road, Surry.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ward’s memory to Christian Missions in Many Lands, PO Box 13, Spring Lake, NJ 07762, or to His Mansion Ministries, PO Box 40, Hillsboro, NH 03244.
