Ely moved to Keene as a child with his parents when they purchased the Christmas Tree Inn, and he went on to spend 55 years as a dedicated and familiar member of the community.
In his younger years, Ely attended seminary school in Georgia with the dream of becoming a pastor. During that time, he shared his musical talent by playing the organ. His faith remained an important part of his life, and he was a devout parishioner at St. Bernard’s Church.
He was also a proud member of the Knights of Columbus, attaining the rank of Fourth Degree. A respected leader within the organization, he previously served the Fourth Degree as Faithful Navigator of the JFK Assembly 629, was a Grand Knight of Council 5414, and also held the role of former District Deputy of the New Hampshire State Council.
Ely built a strong work ethic throughout his life, working for Coca-Cola for 15 years before continuing his career with Coco Plum and later Home Depot.
He and his wife, Carol, shared a love of football and were devoted fans of the New England Patriots. Ely also enjoyed watching golf. Some of his happiest moments were spent at home relaxing in front of the television with his beloved dog, Piper, who faithfully stayed by his side each night until he turned out the light.
A true animal lover, Ely cared deeply for the many pets who were part of his life over the years and have sadly passed, including his cats, Gracie and George, and his dogs, Cassie, Copper, Stevie, and Piper.
A private service will be held at a later date.
