He was born on June 20, 1934 on a “beautiful day in Brooklyn”, as he liked to say, the son of Frank and Margaret Mary (Long) Meehan. He attended Brooklyn Tech and spent his early days working at some of the finer banking institutions in NYC and tending bar. He always said he wasn't the best bartender in the world but he could keep the drunks entertained. In 1964, Jim started his own accounting firm and drove to his clients and working out of a VW van which was converted into a mobile office.
Jim was a natural speaker and more than comfortable in front of a crowd. He had a phenomenal sense of humor and worked as a stand-up comedian and MC in the 50's and 60's. He once shared the stage with Rodney Dangerfield had a television appearance on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour where he won 2nd place.
On September 10, 1964, Jim married Lois A. Clark. The two relocated to Marlborough, NH where they owned and operated the Suffolk House Restaurant from 1972 to 1986, now known as Audrey’s Cafe. Jim also worked for Beech Hill Hospital as Facilities Manager and lecturer and later retired as Facilities Manager for Cheshire County.
In 1994, Jim graduated with an Associates degree in Safety Science from Keene State College.
After retiring, Jim went back to what he knew best and started an accounting firm out of the family dining room. That little, part time gig grew into “Jim Meehan and Son Tax Preparation and Bookkeeping Services” in Keene, which is still family owned and operated by his son, Matthew.
Jim loved baseball and grew up a die hard Brooklyn Dodgers fan. After moving to New England he became a fan of the Red Sox and the Patriots very rarely missing a game on the TV or radio. He also loved playing golf at Brentwood and could be found there on almost any given day. In recent years, Jim rekindled his love for building models and traveling and especially enjoyed experiencing the different cuisines on his adventures.
Jim was a very special man who touched the heart and soul of anyone that met him. The door was always open and the coffee was always on. He would always make time if someone needed to talk day or night and always had a few 'new' jokes at the ready. He was one of the most caring, kind, generous, and funniest people that ever walked “gods' little green earth”.
Jim will be dearly missed by his sons: Michael and his wife Meaghan of Lebanon, ME, Matthew and his significant other Kristy of Keene, NH; Daughters: Kathleen and Victoria; Companion: Sally Lazzaro of Swanzey, NH; grandchildren: Cassidy, Ada, and Milo; sister-in-law: MariAnn Meyer; Cousin: Doris; as well as several nieces and nephews, his Sunday Breakfast Club, and the many friends of Bill W.
