

John F. Scannell, Sr. 76, of Centre Street, Sullivan, NH and a former longtime resident of Wilmington, Mass., died Thursday, September 29, 2011 at the Westwood Care and Rehabilitation Center, Main Street, Keene.
He was born in Arlington, Mass., May 24, 1935, the son of Charles W. and Rose M. (Bodge) Scannell.
Mr. Scannell was a Navy veteran serving during the Korean Conflict.
Considered a “jack-of-all-trade”, Mr. Scannell worked as a general contractor for many years. He also worked in security and as a bartender. He was a member of the Arlington Elks Lodge #1435, the American Legion Post #39 of Arlington, and the Gordon Bissell American Legion Keene Post #4. He was an avid Red Sox, Bruins and Patriots fan. He especially enjoyed his Saturday night card games with his wife and good friends.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Roberta M. (Fitzpatrick) Scannell, whom he married in Lexington, Mass., on November 10, 1984, a son, John F. Scannell, Jr. and his wife, Lee, of Meredith, NH, a daughter, Denise Knebl and her husband, Kevin, of Niceville, FL, two step-sons, Thomas M. Fogg of Lexington, Mass., Philip J. Fogg of Wilmington, four grandchildren, Rachel Scannell, Allison Scannell, Andrew Knebl, Cameron Fogg, a brother, Robert Scannell and his wife Lois of Bow, NH, and several nieces and nephews. Two brothers, William Scannell and Thomas Scannell died earlier.
A memorial and celebration of Mr. Scannell’s life will be held Saturday, October 15, 2011 from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the American Legion Post #39, 370 Massachusetts Avenue, Arlington, Mass. Family and friends are welcome. There are no public calling hours.
The family asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Mr. Scannell’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Disease Research, c/o Kathleen Honaker, Exec. Dir., American Health Assistance Foundation, 22512 Gateway Center Drive, Clarksburg, MD 20871.
The Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene, NH is assisting the family with the arrangements.
