He was born on June 27, 1934, the son of Franklin and Ruth (Dean) Field. He grew up mainly on Long Island, on the estate of Marshal Field III, his godfather. At the age of eight, he began boarding at the Harvey school, after which he was a graduate of the Milton Academy and went on to get a Bachelor’s degree from Yale University. He briefly attended seminary, but chose instead to pursue teaching and received a Masters from Columbia University.
He taught 7th and 8th Grade American History at the Greenwich Country Day School, the Potomac School, and at the Rye Country Day School. He also served as Head Master at GCD and at Potomac. He had a huge impact on many young people, and many of his students still keep in touch with our family.
After caring for his parents for many years, he retired at the age of 50 and moved to Dorset, VT to build his dream house and spent winters in his condo in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. In 1993, he moved to Newfane, VT which has ties to other branches of the Field family. There, he volunteered at the AIDS Project of Southern Vermont and at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church of Brattleboro. He was also Secretary of the Board of the Moore Free Library. After a car accident that broke both his legs, he was cared for by his long-time partner, Craig Newberg. In 2009, he moved to Bentley Commons in Keene where he led a current events group that was attended by local State Representatives.
Jonathan is survived by his oldest daughter, Cassandra (Augusta Field) and her husband, Jeff Powell, as well as their children Ryan and Emily of Gaithersburg, MD; his middle daughter, Elizabeth (Dean) Field of Lowell, MA, Elizabeth’s daughter, Jessica Starr (Deutsch) of Troy, NH, and his youngest daughter, Whitney (Anne) Field of W.
