

Josephine Carney Leonard, 88, of Langdon Place, Keene, died Wednesday afternoon at the Cheshire Medical Center in Keene following a short illness. She was born in Christchurch, New Zealand, April 24, 1923, the daughter of W. Irving and Muriel H. (Allan) Carney. She moved to Boston, Mass., in 1937 and later lived in Newton Center. She was a 1941 graduate of Newton High School and attended Mt. Ida College in Newton. During the 1950s and early '60s, Mrs. Leonard worked as an assistant manager at Peck & Peck, a specialty clothing retailer, in Boston. She married her second husband Robert Leonard in 1963 and lived in South Dartmouth, Mass., then Walpole, N.H., before moving to Keene. They celebrated their 44th anniversary before his death in 2007. Survivors include a sister, Virginia Carney Bittenbender of Charleston, S.C., two daughters, Patricia Clark Albert of Westwood, Mass., and Diana Clark Crookes and her husband, Richard, of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., a stepson, Robert Leonard, Jr., and his wife, Robin, of Punta Gorda, Fla., as well as five grandchildren, a step-grandson, four great grandchildren and two step-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Leonard, a brother, Robert Carney, and a sister, Patricia Carney Lawrence. A Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Leonard will be held on Thursday, July 28, at 11 a.m. at the Fletcher Funeral Home, 33 Marlboro St., Keene. There are no public calling hours. There will be a private Family Memorial Service in late August on Parker Island, Lake Winnipesaukee, in Wolfeboro, N.H. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that gifts be made in memory of Mrs. Leonard to the American Red Cross - NH West Chapter, PO Box 2528, Concord, NH 03302-2528 ( with West Chapter – Leonard on the memo line), or to Cheshire Health Foundation, ℅ Development Office, 580-590 Court St., Keene, NH 03431.
