
He was born September 13, 1934 in Sioux, Iowa to Louis O Peters and Della V Knudsen. Louis attended local schools in Des Moines IA before graduating from Carthage Lutheran College in Carthage IL. Soon after graduation he joined the Social Security Administration While working for the Social Security Administration he moved from Washington DC to Baltimore MD where he then resided with his wife Norma Pilot-Peters, who predeceased him.
He retired from the SSA after over 30 years. While employed there he received his Master’s degree from Loyola University, Baltimore.
.He was one of the first computer programmers in the government and was proudest of the time he and his friend Bernie worked three days and nights setting up and implementing the Medicare system.
He was a season’s ticket holder to the Baltimore Orioles and seldom missed a game. His particular hero was Cal Ripkin.
He met his future fiancée Maureen Robinson while looking online for someone to assist him in his love of traveling which his eyesight condition had made difficult. They decided to make visiting every state capitol their primary goal and did visit over 38 states before declining health cut their travels short. Their trips to Alaska and Hawaii were some of the high points of their travels.
They also joined a group from Des Moines to tour Luther’s Germany and attend the Passion Play in Oberammergau which is held every ten years.
He was a longtime communicant of Christ Lutheran Church Inner Harbor and after retirement became the treasure, gratis. He was able to see a small church in the slums become over a 2 million dollar parish under the direction of its outstanding Pastors and as the Inner Harbor prospered.
He especially loved being a choir member and his beautiful bass voice was much appreciated at the churches he attended until his eyesight deteriorated. He also enjoyed coming to NH to take part in the production of the Messiah at Franklin Pierce College for several years.
After being advised by his physicians that living alone was becoming less of an option and being robbed and burgled several times he decided to make his permanent home with Maureen in NH. They continued their travels and also took many interesting day trips. He was also a researcher and contributor to Wikipedia and an avid watcher of Jeopardy.
After “scouting out” area ELCA congregations Lou chose to join Trinity Lutheran church in nearby Brattleboro VT and has been very happy there.
He is survived by his Aunt, Ruth Nielsen of Rapid City SD, his two nieces, Laura Bigitindavyi of St. Louis Park MN, and Karen Howell of Kenosha WI, daughters of his beloved sister Joy who predeceased him, and their children, “stepsons” Mark Robinson of Marlboro NH and Tim Robinson of Wasilla AK, their children, and also many cousins.
Internment will be held at Christ Inner Harbor and memorials will be held at both churches as he has dear friends in both areas.
