Susan M. Reinhart 72, a longtime resident of Connecticut; the Towns of Avon, Hartford, Farmington, Bloomfield and Newington; passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 18, 2014 in Westmoreland, NH at the Maplewood Nursing Home, surrounded by family.
She was born in Louisville, KY on July 10, 1942 the daughter of George M. and Florence L. Seymour.
Susan was a proud graduate of The Chaffee School in 1960, Wellesley College in 1964 and Central Connecticut State Graduate School in 1972. After her love of family, her passion for service and giving was paramount to her life. She contributed years of time and leadership to non-profit and educational organizations dear to her heart. These include The Junior League of Hartford, The Association of Junior Leagues, Hartford Hospital, Wintonbury PTO - Bloomfield, CT, Old Saint Andrews Church - Bloomfield, CT, Christ Church Cathedral Hartford, CT, Connecticut Valley Girl Scouts Council, The Loomis Chaffee Alumni Association, The Bushnell Park Foundation, Camp Takodah - Richmond, NH, twelve years on The Board of Trustees of The Loomis Institute, Class Officer Wellesley Class of 1964, Chaffee Advisory Committee, Chaffee Book Club, and The Hartford Foundation.
Somehow she also managed to pursue a full professional career in addition to her volunteer work. Early in her career, she used her graduate degree in Urban Education to teach in The Hartford Public Schools as an elementary teacher, curriculum development team member and teacher trainer from 1964-1968. After early motherhood, she reentered the professional workforce as Co-Director of The City Suburb Project funded by The National Endowment for the Humanities at The University of Hartford from 1979 - 1981. Her consulting work in civic affairs on the 1982 United Way Campaign for Connecticut General Life Insurance Company led them to hire and appoint her Assistant Director of Marketing. This began nearly a twenty year career with CIGNA. Her roles transitioned from corporate affairs over into the commercial business in Account Management, Client Integration Projects, Business Process Development and New Business Development. After CIGNA she also worked at ChannelPoint - a venture into e-commerce insurance. However, in the final years of her career, she wove back together her community service, urban renewal and professional skills to serve as Interim and Associate Director for The Antiquarian & Landmarks Society and consulting with other non-profits.
Her diagnosis of Early Onset Alzheimer's in 2008 was difficult but she was proud to turn that too into an act of service volunteering for Clinical Trials at Yale University, joining support groups with others and sharing her diagnosis publicly with her classmates at her 50th High School Reunion. In her final years, her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren ("the grandies") and being in the moment, playing with them.
Susan was a loving mother to Katherine and William Stahl of Walpole, NH and Elizabeth Hallas and Rich Riddle of Kittredge, CO, and Krista Reinhart of Burlington, VT. Susan was also "Gramzie" to Benjamin and Theodore Stahl of Walpole, NH and Hayden and Tallaby Riddle of Kittredge, CO.
In addition to her children and grandchildren, Susan is also survived by her husband Richard Reinhart of Avon, CT whom she married in The Loomis Chaffee Chapel in June of 2001 after many years of friendship; and her sisters, Nancy Seymour (Richard Goldberg) of Cambridge, MA and Carol Gaffey (Jacob) of Barrington, RI. She will join her parents, her mother-in-law, Polly Reinhart and her beloved aunt and uncle, Frank and Timmy Wiedeman.
A memorial service will be held on Friday December 12th at 11:00 at Old St. Andrews Church in Bloomfield, CT.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Resident Activity Fund c/o Steve Wilson, Maplewood Nursing Home of Cheshire County, 201 River Road, Westmoreland, NH. 03467. Mostly, she would ask that we all give of ourselves to others, especially those less fortunate, in any way we can.
The Foley Funeral Home of Keene, NH is assisting the family with the arrangements.
