Jim lived a life full of stories, service, and a deep love for his family and the outdoors. A natural storyteller and gifted fisherman, he never met a stranger for long. He especially loved fishing the Elk River in West Virginia—adventures that later inspired his book, Tales of the Elk River, which reflected his humor, curiosity, and appreciation for life’s simple joys.
A proud veteran, Jim served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He attended high school in Marshall, Illinois, where he excelled in football, swimming, and other athletics. He continued his football career at West Virginia University and later graduated from Eastern Illinois University.
Jim was married for many years to Susan Corbett, with whom he had two children, Margaret Wetzel Bello and Jon Wetzel. He was later married for many years to Neva Baker, who preceded him in death.
He is survived by his daughter, Margaret Wetzel Bello, and her husband, Agustin Bello; his son, Jon Wetzel, and his wife, Suzy Wetzel; his grandchildren, Helena Bello, Marisa Bello, Hazel Wetzel, and Henry Wetzel; his sister, Ellen Mann; his brother, Phillip Wetzel; his stepsons, Kirby Baker, Scott Baker, and Jeff Baker; and his step-grandchildren, Sara, Emily, Grace, Wyatt, and Cathrine.
Those who knew Jim will remember his vivid stories, his love of fishing, and his remarkable ability to make people laugh and feel at ease. His legacy lives on in his family, in his words, and in the many stories that will continue to be told in his memory.
