Michael Hans Dreher passed away on October 8, 2019 due to pancreatic cancer. He is survived by his wife Kerry Mills Dreher of Keller, his daughter Lisa Dreher of Laredo, his daughter Christine Dreher-Bush of North Richland Hills, his son Matthias Dreher, who lives in Europe, and grandsons William Bush and Samuel Bush, of North Richland Hills. Mike was born on May 31st, 1947 in Koenigsbronn, Germany to Wilhelm and Gisela Dreher. He joined the German Air Force at the age of 18 and rose through the ranks to become a fighter pilot, even winning the Top Gun competition while stationed in the United States in 1969. His military career brought him to North Texas, where he was stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, TX, first as a student and later as an instructor pilot while taking part in the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training Program.

Mike loved Texas and chose to remain after his retirement from the military. It was here that he met his wife, Kerry, and they traveled the world together from Berlin to Bangkok before settling in the DFW area.

After his military service, Mike was also a successful businessman, finally serving as the CEO of Kannegiesser USA until 2017. He worked long hours and flew everywhere on business trips but always looked forward to coming home and spending time with his family.

He enjoyed drinking light beer, especially Modelo, and eating Haribo candy. He also liked staying up at night to watch the news and then Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, all the while drinking a glass of bourbon and talking with his daughter.

Besides traveling and sailing, Mike and Kerry enjoyed bike riding, driving around in Mike’s beloved blue and white VW Beetle with the top down, watching movies, visiting family, and even working puzzles. Mike finally convinced Kerry to get into a small 4-seater plane and fly around the North Texas area. That took some good persuading.

Even in his second retirement, Mike had boundless energy for work. He became an instructor pilot again, this time for a private company in 2018, bringing his love of flying to a new generation of students. Mike was also very passionate about sailing, and rarely happier than when he was on his boat with family and friends, the wind at his back and the sun upon his smiling face.

His kindness, compassion, and love of life were an inspiration to all who were lucky enough to know him, and he will be missed by many.

Mike’s funeral Mass will be at 10:30am on Friday, October 11th, 2019 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Keller, TX.

Mike was a Luke graduate in Class 71-I and flew F-104 Starfighters in Memmingen and Jever before ending his flying career with ENJJPT at Sheppard AFB, Texas. He stayed in the Dallas area marketing industrial type washing machines and finally became President of Kannegiesser USA. He retired a few years ago but returned to flying this time as an instructor for beginners in Cessnas and Pipers. In one of our last conversations I questioned the sanity of teaching beginners in the DFW airspace and environment. He responded: “Sure, but it keeps you mentally young and fit.” Well, so much for planning and ideas. We will keep Mike in our memories and his family in our prayers.

I met Michael for the first time when I was honored to attend the wedding celebrating his union with my lifetime friend, Kerry. Since that time I have come to know Michael as both a ‘gentle’ man and a gentleman! Always with a a bit of a mischievous smile, Michael was amiable and congenial as well as caring and attentive to others. His easygoing manner made him approachable and easy to talk to, and any conversation with Michael was intriguing because he always had an interesting perspective, anecdote or fact to share. He did this with such humor and humility that despite his notable achievements, he was never arrogant. I deeply respect Michael for the way he showed up in the world and the impact he had on others. I love Michael for loving and supporting my dear friend Kerry in countless ways that she needed over their years together. The world needs more good men like Michael and I am fortunate to have been touched by his presence and his memory.

Our hearts are broken and deepest condolences to Kerry and Lisa. Knowing Mike for over 20 years has been an honor. He always brought his smile and friendship with no expectations in return. When I first met Mike he approached me and my wife Lisa, not looking to make friends but to be a friend. Our fondest memories at the Polka Boys in Indianapolis and many Germany trips with Mike will always remind us the of the wonderful person he was. I still have the motorcycle riding coveralls he gave me when he dropped his bike in the driveway one time and decided it was enough for awhile. I am 5'10" and Mikes comment was I will grow into them. God bless you Mike Dreher, you will be highly missed.

Initially, my interview and first meeting over 9 years ago with Mike was very intimidating shaking hands with a taller and very powerful businessman. Over time, I realized his kind heart and caring attitude for all of his team and friends made it easy to work for such an amazing boss. Mike was a true leader that made you want to run through a wall for him on the business side while he also had the awareness to teach the importance of the home life balance and sincerely cared for my family. Mike, you taught me more than just being a salesman by doing things the right way with dignity. I will miss your stories as it was great to recently get together a couple months ago and hear a few more. You will be greatly missed by all. My deepest sympathy not only to the family but to the world as we just lost one of the best men I have ever known.

Mike was the quintessential German - proper and to the point. I started doing business with Kannegiesser and Mike because of his ability to put my concerns to rest. I felt whatever the problem was he would make it right and he always did. Over time, we got to be good friends and one day I asked Mike to come to Indianapolis to see the Polka Boys play. He looked at me and said very dryly "Ed, I've seen many polka bands I don't need to see another one". I begged him and told him this is different and so he came anyway being a good sport for his customer. He politely showed up and was blown away by this band to the point where bought the CD's for his staff in Dallas!
I will always remember Mike as a gentleman and I am blessed to have been touched by his friendship. He will be sorely missed.

I had the honor of meeting Mike in the mid 1980’s working at Washex. He is very instrumental in the way my life has turned out. He was a great man and an amazing role model on how to treat people. Mike was larger than life when I met him. From being a fighter pilot to riding the prettiest BMW motorcycle to work. I was lucky enough to play golf with him in what he would say “is the best golf tournament ever”, the Hospice golf tournament. We were not to successful in winning but always had the best time trying. It was impossible not to have a great time when you were with Mike. He knew how to live life to the fullest. I will miss the birthday text from him every year, that continued after his retirement. I will miss my friend. God bless you mike and your family.
