Born on August 23, 1938, in El Paso, Texas, to Norman and Evelyn Peyton, he enjoyed being the center of their lives, until the arrival of his sister, Kathleen, six years later. He became her mentor in skills that blended their age difference: football, marksmanship, music and board games. He also shared his father's passion for photography, and they spent many hours in the darkroom (which also served as the kitchen) developing photos which are cherished by family members today. While a student at Austin High School, he was offered the opportunity to serve as yearbook photographer.
He graduated from Texas Western College and followed his dream of becoming an attorney by enrolling in the University of Texas School of Law, Austin, Texas, following in the footsteps of his uncle, Curtis Peyton, of Brownwood, Texas. Upon completion of his Doctor of Jurisprudence and the State Bar exam, he returned to El Paso, Texas to serve briefly in the County Attorney's office before joining John Ackard in private practice. During this time, he married the love of his life, Kathryn (Kay)Tillman, on June 26, 1965, at Trinity Methodist Church, where they first met. Kay was the daughter of longtime El Paso residents, J. Harold and Lucile (Ponsford) Tillman. Norman joined the United States Army in 1964 and served in active duty in the reserves for several years. He was accepted into Special Warfare School where he received training and recognition for Psychological Operations work. He was discharged honorably in 1969 as a 1st Lieutenant. Not long after, Norman and Kay welcomed daughters Lisa Anne (1969) and Karen Kay (1972) into their family. Norman and Kay were both active members of Trinity Methodist Church, where he served on the Board of Stewards.
After many years in corporate insurance law with Maryland Casualty Company, Norman was offered an opportunity in Houston, Texas as a partner in the firm, Peyton and Noble, which was affiliated with Zurich Worldwide Insurance. He relocated to Houston in 1990. Kay joined Norman at their new home in Spring, Texas at the end of the school year retiring from her 20-year teaching career. Lisa and Karen completed their educations at Baylor University. Eventually Lisa her husband moved to that same area and started their family with sons Benjamin in 2003 and Jaxon 2012.
Norman’s favorite role was probably that of "Poppers" to his grandsons. He loved being a part of their lives, particularly reading to them and taking them on “business trips” to the bank and post office.
Following his retirement, Norman and Kay ultimately moved to North Richland Hills, Texas in late 2017. After a lingering illness, Kay passed away in 2021, and Norman made the decision to move into a place where his physical and medical needs could be met. His daughter, Karen, facilitated his relocation to Discovery Village Alliance Town Center. The family is extremely grateful for the care he received while there.
Throughout his life, Norman had several favorite places to visit: the mountains of New Mexico and Colorado, the beaches of Southern California, and his favorite destination -- Hawaii. As a devoted family man, he relished having his loved ones with him when traveling to these locations. A Christmas trip to Canada in 1999 with his family and his sister Kathy's family, was a memory they all cherish.
He is survived by his daughters Lisa and Karen Peyton, and his grandsons, Benjamin and Jaxon, and his sister, Kathy and her husband Albert, and nieces Ambre and Holly Leffler.
