November 22, 1930 – September 8, 2012
Our father and grandfather, Art Day, has embarked on his last adventure following a short illness. Predeceased by his wife Louise in 2007, he leaves behind sons Stuart and Richard, daughter Elinor, grandchildren Hannah, Jonathan, James, Alexander, Tamsen, Catherine and the extended Day family.
Born in Vancouver to George and Kathleen, he spent his early years on the Day Road family orchard and on the McKenzie Road orchard. He was well known in the fruit industry for his knowledge and expertise, and was never afraid to try something new. His thirst for adventure took him to the N.W.T. and Alberta where he spent some time in the R.C.M.P. He then spent some time in Alberta as a school teacher, impressing young minds with his passion for learning. In 1965, his love of the land brought him and his family back to the McKenzie Road orchard, where he spent his remaining years surrounded by the people he cherished.
He treasured his time spent flying, searching for the elusive forest mushroom, and nurturing relationships all over Canada, the U.S., and Norway. He will forever be remembered for his bright smile and occasional toothless grin, that special twinkle in his eye and his philosophical outlook on life. We’re sure that everyone who knew Art holds a special memory of this unique man.
The following quote was taken from “A Short History of the Life of Abraham Day”, dad’s great grandfather, a man whosae life seemed to parallel his own:
“April 28, 1900 marks the dawn of the new day in the world of greater opportunity and activity for Abraham Day, whose memory here will live always in the hearts and homes of his people and be preserved in the galaxy of noble men.”
And so, Sepember 8, 2012 marks the dawn of the new day for Ephriam Arthur Day.
A celebration of Art’s life will be held later on in the fall.
