Florence Hazel Evans

Florence passed away peacefully into the presence of her Lord on January 2, 2025. She was born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario on Dec. 11, 1928 to John and Hazel Buck. Florence was the 2nd oldest with an older brother, Roy and a younger sister, Thelma. Her dad passed away at an early age and her mom remarried two years later. Seven more children were born to Hazel, which created a busy, loving household, with lots of brothers and sisters. She was raised in a Christian home and at the age of 16 she accepted Christ as her Saviour and Lord. Florence went to school in St. Catherines, Ontario. After finishing her school years she took a 1 yr. training program as a Certified Practical Nurse and was employed at hospitals in the Toronto area.

In 1956 she met and fell in love with a prairie farmer, Gordon Martin. Gordon was a grain farmer in Saltcoats, Sask. Here they were blessed with their six children, Donald, Terrance, Heather, Karen Lyn, Glen and Kirby. Karen Lyn died as an infant at 9 months of age and Kirby died tragically when he was 18 yrs. old. in Abbotsford.

The family moved to Abbotsford, B.C. in 1972 after Gordon suffered a heart attack and could no longer farm. Four years later Gordon passed away with cancer. This left her with a huge responsibility. Her strong faith and trust in God was what she relied on to raise her 5 children on her own.

In 1986 she married Jack Evans. They lived in the Abbotsford area until 2016 when they moved to Kelowna to be close to family. Jack passed away in 2022. The last four years mom resided at Cottonwood’s Care Home until the time of her passing.

Over the course of her life she was characterized by a quiet spirit of peace, joy and contentment even through difficult times. She maintained this Spirit and attitude right up until her last breath!

She is survived by her four children Don (Alison), Terrance (Alexandra), Heather, Glen (Lori), several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She will be extremely missed by everyone who knew her.
