Gerry passed away peacefully on April 21, 2026, after enduring renal cancer and congestive heart failure. He had just celebrated his 95th birthday, in hospice, with all of his children and their spouses.
Gerry is predeceased by his loving wife, Corrie, in 2011. He is survived by his children Margaret (Lawrence) Bouma of Kelowna, Marion (Barry) Brydon of Brandon, Shirley (Bryan) Laurie of Winnipeg, and Don (Marlene) Hoogmoed of Winnipeg; grandchildren Ian, Sheldon, Heather, Steven, Curtis, Jared, Kirstin, and Ryan; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Gerry was born in the Netherlands on April 15, 1931, married Corrie in 1952, and shortly thereafter they immigrated together to Canada where they made their home and raised a wonderful family. Gerry was a very caring father and his favourite memories were of the annual family camping trips. The majority of Gerry’s career was spent in the fertilizer and chemical business across western Canada with Cominco, ending in Calgary. Gerry and Corrie retired to Kelowna and spent many happy years there, as well as wintering in Phoenix. Gerry will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
The family would like to thank the many doctors, nurses, and care providers for their compassionate care. A Family Memorial Service will be held in Winnipeg in July, where Gerry will be buried with his wife, Corrie. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Central Okanagan Hospice House.
