Jan was born on September 14, 1962 in Stewart, BC and was raised in Kelowna BC, where she currently resided. Jan attended Dorothea Walker Elementary and Okanagan Mission Secondary School, graduating in 1980. She moved to Olds, Alberta in 1985 and raised her four children there. Missing the Okanagan Valley, Jan returned to her hometown of Kelowna in 2011.
Jan was a multi-talented, hard-working and creative woman. She studied massage therapy at MH Vicars School and commercial floriculture at Olds College. Jan was an entrepreneur at heart and started her own businesses as a gardener, florist, and photographer. She was always passionate about any endeavour she undertook. Jan was also a talented landscaper, and she had been working as the head gardener at Sunset Ranch Golf & Country Club since 2018. It was a job that she loved. Jan’s artistic skills will be greatly missed by her family.
Since childhood, Jan had a passion for animals. She rode horses as a teen, raised many animals during her time on the farm in Olds, and founded FoalQuest, an equine rescue that operated throughout central Alberta. She always had dogs in her home, including her cherished pet Jayda. Jan and Jayda spent many hours hiking the hills around Kelowna where Jan took outstanding photos that we will always cherish. Above all else, Jan loved her family. Her children and grandchildren were her absolute pride and joy.
Jan was predeceased by her mother, Lorraine Braden, in 2015 and by her brother and niece, Bill and Megan Braden, in 2018. She will be sadly missed by her children: Erin (Jeff) Smyth; Warren (Gillian) Turnbull; Cayley (Devon) Schmidt; and Raina (James) Turnbull, as well as by her grandchildren Caydence, Hudson, Emmett, and Sarah. Also mourning the loss of Jan are her father Barry Braden; her stepmother Colleen Bryce; her sister Cheryl (Mike) Dedels; her sister-in-law Shana Braden; her nieces Jenna Lishman and Kenzie Braden; and her nephew Craig Dedels. In addition, Jan leaves behind her two loving aunts, her uncle, and her four cousins. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to an animal rescue of your choice.
A Celebration of Life for Jan will be held on Friday January 24, 2020 at the
Sunset Ranch Golf and Country Club, Kelowna from 1-3pm
