One of my most memorable Christmases was at Mama and Papa’s house in Nanaimo. It was the Christmas that I decided to test and see if Santa was real, by asking for Rudolph’s bell. Santa said he couldn’t give me Rudolph’s as that was needed to help guide them but still gave me a bell from his sleigh. It was in a cloth bag and certainly looked to be authentic from the North Pole; I loved that bell. That was also the Christmas I got a life-sized dog stuffy that I had seen (and probably made a scene about) in Toys R Us. And as if that wasn’t being spoiled enough, my mom, with some help from Mama, sewed me an incredible, beautiful Cinderella gown. I’d say I was the luckiest little Princess in the world. I am grateful that Mama passed on her gift for sewing to my mom, who passed it onto me. There’s a sense of pride that I feel when I’m sewing or knitting, knowing it’s a skill that’s been passed on with love through generations.
Another thing I am extremely grateful for are those crepes. I am drooling thinking about them; I could put those back as fast as she could get them out of the pan haha. My record was eight in one sitting, I think she was rather impressed. She did give me her recipe, but they are never quite the same when they aren’t made with her love and happiness infused into them.

My family, the Mitchells and the Olsen family go way way back. The Olesens started with Anita and my family followed with Vernon. Then it was Kevin on their side and Garry's for us. The third child, Johanne came just 10 months before me and I'm so glad she did as we became the best of friends, "sisters" from another Mrs. Lucille and Jorgen one upped is with baby Shannon who mom cared for when Lucille went back to  work. 

I recall many fun family events with the Olesens especially going to the lake with their boat. Jorgen promised Johanne and I that we could try water skiing but only if we could demonstrate our ability to swim out to the dock. We were maybe 8/9 and strong swimmers so we jumped at the chance. Soon as we got about halfway there we were surprised by little pinches on our legs and feet. Unbeknownst to us Kevin and Garry had followed  us and were trying to scare us to go back shore. We kept going though all while Lucille was yelling at the boys to stop pestering us.

Another favourite memory was a Christmas dinner at their home. We had finished dinner and Lucille was making her wonderful crepes with strawberries. I was so excited and could barely contain myself. Then Jorgen said I couldn't have one unless I ate a pickled herring first. 
Lucille kept telling him to stop teasing me but I had taken  the herring and swallowed it whole!!! I got two crepes. Lucky me, I think.

From all of us, Vernon, Garry and myself and on behalf of the earlier departed Sylvia and George we treasured our families friendships and will hold our memories a little closer.

Mom loved the water and going to Christina Lake.

We have so many happy memories of Jorgen and Lucille it is hard to pick one. One does stick out though.  I was expecting Kathy.  Lucille had just had Shannon.  I think she saw how nervous and nieve I was and so she had me come over to her house for a whole day starting at 8 AM to show me a day in the life of a new born.  Not many friends would do that for you. Kathy was colicky and cried all the time.  Lucille dropped by our house one morning with Shannon who was probably 8 weeks old.  She handed me Shannon and picked up Kathy, and she stopped crying immediately.  That was just the kind of woman Lucille was always helping out. On our return from a transfer to Oswego for a year, they were both there to meet us at the airport, so thoughtful.  We went to many parties and dances with the two of them and had many dinners with them.  We have only happy memories of Jorgen and Lucille.

Sending my condolences to the family… Anita, I remember going to your house in the 70’s and your mom was always so pleasant and nice, she made me feel welcomed! You are so fortunate to have had her all these years! Thinking of you all and would love to connect again with you
