1929-2016
Our very dear father Malcolm "Mutt" Mowat passed away peacefully at his home in West Kelowna, BC on April 29, 2016 at the age of 87 years, after stubbornly battling cancer for over three years. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 37 years Billie (nee Potter) and by his father Roderick; his mother Marion (nee Webb); his sister Catherine Legree; his brother Bill; and his grandson Andrew Rodgman.
Malcolm is mourned by his seven children - Sue Rodgman(Kingston); Peter/Sherry (Halifax); Dave/Brenda Piazza (Kingston); Sam/Gia (Coldstream); Bonnie /Derek Kostal (Halifax); Rob/Suzanne L'Heureux (Port Coquitlam); and Sandra/Wes Dutka (West Kelowna), as well as To Duong/Anna (Toronto). He will be missed by his dear companion Marina Leisen, and his many grandchildren: Chris (New Orleans); Stuart (Halifax); Min-Jee (Vancouver); Max (Coldstream); Ben, Nick and Lauren Kostal (Halifax); Isaac (West Kelowna); Beatrice, Madeleine and Zachary (Port Coquitlam); Courtney and Riley Adam (Kingston); and Arlette Duong (Toronto).
Malcolm joined the RCAF in 1951 and spent the next 24 years flying a variety of fixed and rotary wing aircraft, including the Harvard (Flight Instructor); Lancaster and Argus (Maritime Patrol); Labrador and Sea King (Search and Rescue); and Twin Engine Huey. After retiring in 1975, he joined the Canadian Coast Guard in Dartmouth and then in Parry Sound, flying the Jet Ranger and single-engine Huey helicopters for the next 13 years. He retired in 1989, after 37 years of service to his country and after amassing a total of 12,000 flying hours including 7,000 in helicopters.
During his time with the Dartmouth Canadian Coast Guard, he was the helicopter pilot onboard several Icebreakers including the Louis St. Laurent and the John A. MacDonald and made many Arctic voyages on these ships. As well, while with the CCG in both Dartmouth and Parry Sound, Malcolm would fly the helicopters out to service the lighthouses along the coasts of Nova Scotia and Georgian Bay.
Malcolm loved the game of hockey and played the game into his sixties. He played both hockey and baseball on many of the military teams where he was stationed including the Greenwood Bombers, of which he is most proud.
Golf played a big role in Malcolm's life. He was a member of courses in Summerside, Dartmouth, Parry Sound and his last course, Shannon Lake in West Kelowna.
He played golf for most of his life and on his last round, at 86 years, was still able to beat his son and grandson handily.
Dads' passion for flying helicopters had him wanting one last chance and thanks to the kindness of HNZ Topflight in Penticton, was blessed to be able to fly one last time at 84 years of age, flying the entire half hour trip and returning with a perfect landing. We were all impressed!
Malcolm was a member of St David's Presbyterian Church where he served on numerous boards and as an elder for years.
The family would especially like to express their thanks and gratitude to: Dr. Claremont, Dr. Weisenthal, Dr. Kim, Dr. Wadwa, Palliative Care Nurses Anne and Kathleen, Staff at the Kelowna Cancer Center, Home Care support staff and a special thank-you to Tara for all she did for Dad and the family.
Visitation will be held at St. David's Presbyterian Church, 271 Snowsell Street, Kelowna on Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016 from 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm. The funeral service will commence at 2:00 pm.
