

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Maurice Robert Verhelst in Kelowna on December 16, 2010. Maurice was predeceased by his older siblings – Gerard, Marie, Madeleine and Paula. He is survived by his 6 children and their mother, Yvonne, his 16 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Maurice was born in the rural district of Lafleche, SK in 1927. His family farmed in that area, and Maurice eventually took up farming nearby. He married in 1954 and started raising a family. In 1973 the family moved to Kelowna, residing in the Rutland area. From 1973 to 1979 Maurice operated an ornamental iron business. Maurice’s involvements in Kelowna included the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Cursillo movement, being active in St. Theresa’s parish, and working for the Canadian Catholic Development & Peace Organization. Maurice became interested in genealogy and traveled to Belgium, Salt Lake City, and through the prairie provinces gathering information. He also enjoyed woodworking and gardening. Maurice loved his immediate and extended family and traveled every spring and fall to SK visiting family along his route. In Kelowna he enjoyed daily outings for coffee with new and old friends. The family wishes to express gratitude to the doctors and nurses on Ward 4A and ICU at the Kelowna General Hospital and at Hospice House for the excellent care provided to Maurice. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 pm Monday, Dec. 20th at St. Theresa’s Church 750 Rutland Rd. N. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am Tuesday Dec. 21, 2010 at St. Theresa’s Church, with cremation to follow. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Lafleche.
