April 28, 1939-June 16, 2021
It’s with sadness that we announce the death of our deeply loved, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Paul Lacny. Paul died in the early morning hours of June 16, 2021 after a decades long struggle with his heart health. He had a determined will to live and we, as family and friends, are grateful that we could enjoy his loving, generous spirit for as long as we did. Now he is resting peacefully in the safest place in the universe, God’s memory.
Paul will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years, Helen; his daughter, Linda Gahler(John); his granddaughter, Natasja Mearns (Christopher) and his great-granddaughter, Rowan. Paul leaves to mourn, his brother-in-law, Bill Craven (Wendy); his 2 nieces, Adrienne Gorcak (Doug); Christina Lindner (Steve); his nephew Michael Craven (Anna)and their children, Mikayla, Brielle and Colten.
He is also survived by Jay Lacny (Sherilynne, Chase, Shay); Cousins Geraldine and Emily and other family members. He will be missed by many friends, old and new.
Paul had a long and satisfying life. He was born on April 28, 1939 in Princeton, BC.
His parents were Paul and Catherine Marie (Yackulic) Lacny. His mother, Katie, was afflicted with MS and deteriorated shortly after Paul’s birth. His father moved the family to New Westminster to accommodate his wife’s medical needs and so that family could help care for Paul, who was a toddler. Thus, he was surrounded by a warm and loving family of many Aunts and Uncles who loved him greatly. His mother was a warm and loving woman who handled her affliction with a sense of humor. Growing up in such an atmosphere created in Paul the beautiful qualities of love, compassion, kindness and fellow feeling. He was always interested in people, thoughtfully writing cards and sending chocolates to those in need, right up to the last day of his life.
He had an enduring love for his childhood sweetheart, Helen. Their marriage was one day short of 61 years. Even as the ambulance was driving away, he gave her a beautiful anniversary card expressing his appreciation for her as a wife. He was an excellent Father and a loyal friend. He was a man of faith, having been baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1959. He was firmly convinced that God’s promises of a Paradise earth would be fulfilled in the future and that he would be there to enjoy it.
(Revelation 21:3,4) He shared his faith with all he met, even moving the family to St. Lucia WI in 1970, to teach bible truths to interested ones. He was a good public speaker and enjoyed teaching in the local congregations where he resided. He was known to include in his families activities those children who were missing their own fathers. He also enjoyed visiting and encouraging older ones, particularly widows and widowers.
He enjoyed a long career in the Insurance field, working as an adjuster with a focus on bodily injury claims. He first worked in Terrace, BC, then Kitimat and finally working the majority of his career in Vancouver. He was well respected and noted for his honesty, fairness and thoroughness in addressing each individuals claims.
Paul leaves a legacy behind. His empathy, compassion and care for people. These qualities resonate in the memories of those who mourn him. What more could be asked for; that Paul Lacny was a good man.
