It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Richard at his home in Kelowna, BC on October 11, 2023. Richard is mourned by his daughters Andrea and Jennifer, his sister Helen Fearman (née Ilona Gyulai), his nieces Jessica Fearman, Greta Fearman and Catherine Brown, grand-niece Gwendolyn Brown, cousins in Hungary, France and Toronto and friends in both Winnipeg and Kelowna. Richard was pre-deceased by his parents Craig and Helen Dunhill (née Kalman and Ilona Gyulai) and his sister Maria Prygrocki (née Maria Gyulai).
Richard came to Canada, fleeing Hungary at the age of 2 with his family, following the Hungarian Revolution in 1956. He grew up in Winnipeg and graduated from St. Paul’s High School. He was soon married to his sweetheart Lucy Marcoux and they had two children. His work in Information Technology took him to Calgary in 1985 and then to Red Deer in 1989. Richard and Lucy separated in 1997 and neither re-married. Richard moved back to Calgary, but he was not happy there. Shortly after the death of his mother in 2003, Richard returned to Winnipeg to care for his ailing father Craig Dunhill. Following his father’s death in 2014 he moved to Kelowna for a peaceful retirement.
Our family had a reunion in Prince Edward County in 2019 which was the last time all of us were together with Richard, including our niece Catherine and grand-niece Gwendolyn and our second cousins John and Martha Dvorak. This event left us with many fond memories.
Richard was always up for an intellectual challenge and he helped anyone who asked with their computer problems or questions. He was great company and entertained friends and family with his stories. He enjoyed playing bridge, which he continued to do with some Winnipeg friends over the internet. Everyone who knew Richard considered him a kind and generous friend who was always ready to help. His two daughters always remained the love of his life. We will all miss him terribly.
The family would like to thank the kind and wonderful medical care provided to Richard by Dr. Nancy Burget, Dr. Emma King and Dr. Jonathan Keith Todd, as well as by the doctors, nurses and staff at Kelowna General Hospital.
We would also like to thank Breanna Collins at Dignity Memorial for her assistance in these past difficult days.
Richard’s ashes will be scattered at Green Acres in Winnipeg, near his parents, at a small family service at a later date.
Donations in Richard’s name may be made to the Kelowna General Hospital.
