Doodle and I have been friends since we were very young kids playing touch football on Hoyt Street. That friendship grew as we did, playing Little League Baseball & Football with our Dads as the coaches. Under Dickie Abrahamson, we got our first taste of umpiring, and Joel loved it so much he's been calling balls and strikes for the past 50 years. He had a big smile, a funny laugh and a huge heart. He was loyal, compassionate and very sentimental (has more memorabilia than you can imagine). He always had kind words and fantastic stories to share. One of the very best guys I ever knew. Heartfelt condolences to Beverly, the kids, and his entire family. Love you, Doodle, miss you already. God Bless you up in Heaven.

I am devastated by the loss of the happiest guy I ever knew. We and Bev raised all our children together through OHIO elementary…middle school,  stayed close in those difficult parenting years known as the teens. Commiserated as the parents of adults about all the worries that come with letting go. I never thought I’d be losing a dear friend so soon. I miss you already and I am so mad I didn’t find time to stop by more. We always think there is more time. Feeling sad, a  great loss to  the family, to friends and absolutely to our community, which desperately needs more people like Joel. Love you my friend, rest easy big guy. You were so very loved.  Peace to all of you.

My very sincere condolences to the Marrs Family.  I’ve known Joel for most of my life.  Though we haven’t seen or talked in quite some time, I would always enjoy catching up. Joel’s family were members of Bethlehem Presbyterian Church (Byrd and Hoyt St) for many years.  I had his dad for my Sunday school teacher.  Joel and our youth group at church played sports and enjoyed Youthtime Christian Center playing organized Basketball and we also played on a Church inner mural Softball league together.  He loved Sports.. and he loved Baseball.  I’m very sorry for the loss of this great friend and brother in Christ.   Rest in peace.  Until we meet again.

Joel, your smile,  silliness,  and kindness will be missed.  We have know each other for over 50 years and our conversations were dear to me; you were always uplifting and positive .  Our loss is your gain as you  rest easy with our Savior.   Please watch over and pray for us because we know that we ALL need it.  Hopefully all that loved you will see you in heaven one day.   You were one of a kind and am proud to call you friend.

Joel was a great friend we would always talk on the phone if I need a question answer he was there for me I know him for 2years and I will miss him I be missing the phone calls. I am sorry he also was a great umpire he knew the rules of baseball he also read the rule book from front to back what a great guy he was thanks Thomas Leffler

Sorry for your loss. I never met Joel in person. Only through his Facebook posts. We shared the same passion for umpiring. And I always thought that his way if imparting his knowledge upon others was done with kindness and dignity. Thank you for loaning your husband and dad to us.
