I was in Miss Ballou's 7th grade class as well. She was a strong independent woman, a wonderful teacher and a great role model.  I am grateful to have known her.  I also treasure the pearl necklace. Rest in peace, Miss Ballou.

Ms. Ballou was a wonderful lady. Doesn’t get any better. She was kind, caring, authentic, hard working, dedicated, and she touched the lives of thousands. I’m thankful I was one of them. May she Rest In Peace.  

Miss Ballou was my 7th grade teacher at St. Joseph's on Main Street in the late 60's. I absolutely adored her. I remember wonderful field trips and just great science lessons. She truly was inspirational.

Miss Ballou was one of the toughest teachers I ever had… but also one of the best!  She knew her math, and she knew how to teach it! She loved talking about the Bills and the Sabres with her students!

I remember she required students at SJS to stand up behind their desks when they entered the classroom. When they were silent, Miss Ballou would say, “Good Morning, class,” and students would reply in unison, “Good Morning, Miss Ballou.” Then she would allow you to be seated. The other teachers liked this so much, that they adopted the practice, too!

She also had some famous lines she would say, but the most memorable one was reserved for students longingly looking up at the clock to see when class would be over…“Clock watchers, I tell you this… Time will pass, but will you?  I have doubts about a few!”

I have been teaching for more than 25 years now, and I hope someday my students will remember me as fondly as I remember her. 



I had Miss Ballou in 7th grade at St Johns.  She was the best teacher—fair but tough. She always had time and patience to help this mathamatically-challenged girl understand the complexities of math, and always had an ear to listen to preteen angst!  At the end of the year, she gifted me with a lovely pearl necklace, which I later proudly wore on my wedding day.  I think of Miss Ballou often with immense gratitude and fondness.  RIP

Ms. Ballou was my 6th grade teacher at St. Joe’s.  She nurtured my interest in math and science to such an extent that I became a chemist!  It is amazing how much impact one person can make on so many people.  She was my favorite grade school teacher!  My memories have faded over the years, but seeing her name in the obituaries brought back that wonderful feeling and thankfulness even though it has been ~60 years since I last saw her.  My thanks for the roll she played in my life and my condolences to her family.

Miss Ballou was my 4th and 5th grade teacher at St. Paul’s in Kenmore.  We loved her.  She was so cool, so pretty and so kind. I loved going to school and being with her.  What a great role model for little girls in the  fifties.  She was smart, caring, played softball, was single, and she enjoyed her students.  We were lucky.  She moved with us from 4th to 5th grade.  I am a retired teacher myself.  I don’t doubt that she presented in such a way as to make many of her students choose a career in education.  Thank you Miss Ballou, you made a difference.

Ms. Ballou was one of my  favorite all time teaches. I had her in 7th grade (1967) and she was so knowledgeable and we learned so much that year at St . Joes. We all loved her. May she rest in peace!!!

Miss Ballou was my 6th grade teacher at St. Joseph School.  Our class was a combination of 6th and 7th grade. As I recall there were 60, yes 60, students and she taught each one of us with care and pure love. I remember her 1963 yellow convertible with spinner wheel caps. She was as cool as she was kind.


We loved our dear neighbor Millie for many years before we moved to Florida. Millie was an amazing lady. She was caring, funny and always willing to lend a helping hand. May she rest in peace.

     Miss Ballou definitely made a mark on me when I was in 7th grade at St Johns. I remember counting how many times she said,  “Basically”  and how she always used the catch phrase, “Time will pass, but will you?” More importantly, she was the teacher who recognized  that I had some ability in math and gave me the confidence to major in math in college. I’m a teacher today and will never forget the impact she had on me.  Rest In Peace Miss Ballou, as you can be assured that you have touched the lives of many! 

Ms. Ballou made you work hard and demanded only your best.  She inspired us to believe we can achieve our academic goals through hard work and the commitment to the details.  While she was tough (only if you didn’t want to work hard or take school seriously), she was also fair, kind, and a person of faith.  Much of who I am today is because of her, and now my kids are who they are academic wise because of her too; hard work, no excuses, detailed, be kind to others.  Your teaching legacy will always be generational, and we all thank you.  May you RIP.  Love and prayers, our condolences  to the family.

Miss Ballou was my 7th grade math teacher and boy was she tough.   Now a teacher myself at St  John's I understand what a great teacher she was.  She became a colleague and a friend and was a true inspiration. 

Ah, Miss Balou... She was one of my 8th grade teacher at St John's.  She was tough but fair and truly a sweet heart once you got to know her.  The first time I remember actually seeing a teacher as a person was after the entire 8th grade had been given detention for "failing to set a good example" while having NOT participated in a cafeteria food fight that included grades 5, 6, and 7.  We were so angry at the injustice and I distinctly remember Miss Balou indulging us as we vented our frustration during detention.  She was kind and quiet and tried her best to council and console our primitive teenage angst.  She really was a wonderful lady and I hope that she enjoyed a happy and fulfilled life.

There are some people who make a mark on your life that you will never forget.  Aunt Millie was my teacher in 7th grade (but she wasn’t Aunt Millie yet). That title came when she nudged her nephew Bill towards me, and we became lifelong friends. I was able to know her a little better through my relationship with Bill, and I realized what a wonderful person she was - I will never forget her.
