Tuesday, September 6, 2022. Ann was born May 18, 1925 in Snyder, Texas to Robert and Ruth Horsley.
Ann grew up in Ennis Creek, Texas with her 6 siblings. Because of severe allergies, “hay fever”, helping in the cotton fields with her family was limited. Given the extra time, she became an avid reader and became the first of her siblings to receive a high school diploma. After high school she completed training to become a drafting technician. Working in a Ft. Worth factory alongside others of the “Greatest Generation”, she contributed to the war effort during WWII drafting machine parts to be used in bomber planes. The factory today is known as Lockheed Martin.
Ann returned to west Texas to work in Muleshoe, Texas for the Bailey County Attorney. She flourished in this legal secretary position learning volumes about law and life. It was during that time that she met
her soulmate, Carroll Howell. They had no idea of the adventures that awaited them after their wedding day on April 6, 1950 in Muleshoe. Within a few years, Carroll received a job opportunity with Transwestern Pipeline Company in Arizona. They packed up their young family and traveled west on Route 66. Remote Leupp, Arizona became their home along with several other families that they soon bonded with. The stories of the Hopi culture, avoiding rattlesnakes, navigating dirt roads & flash floods from the Little Colorado River are endless. The adventures continued when they were transferred to Thoreau, New Mexico. Raising 4 children on the Navajo Reservation was challenging yet memorable. To help with her family's growing needs, Ann became a newspaper distributor for the Gallup Independent in Gallup, New Mexico. Her route consisted of driving 150 miles to bring the daily news to small towns, villages and trading posts from Gallup to Crownpoint, New Mexico. Rain, sleet or snow, Ann was relentless at her task. She affectionately became known as “The Paper Lady” to the many on the Navajo Reservation that awaited her daily visit. Ann & Carroll moved to Belen, New Mexico in the early 1980’s where they retired and played golf with wonderful friends.
Ann had a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. She walked through life following
His Word and now knows the complete peace that only He can give. Known for her quick wit, laughter & deep love for family and friends, Ann left a lasting impression on the many lives she touched.
Ann is survived by her children; Janitha Howell, Timothy Wayne Howell (Michelle); Elesa Donham (Brent), and Rebecca Lilley (Kent); grandchildren Robert, Christopher, Steven, Lindsay, Melissa, and Jackson; 5 great grandchildren, sister-in-law Dorothy Horsley and many nieces and nephews. Ann was preceded in death by her loving husband of 43 years Robert Carroll Howell, her parents, 3 brothers and 3 sisters.
