Mrs. Ella Ruth Hite came to the end of her journey here on earth April 24, 2011. She was a tiny woman with a huge attitude, who gave birth to eight children and remained married to her high school sweetheart, James Franklin Hite (Buster), for forty plus years before she became a widow. Many people give up at this point in life but not Ruth. She was hugging seventy when she took her first whitewater rafting trip and was an avid camper—tent camping—until she was eighty-two. Many family vacations were spent in the Smoky Mountains sitting around a campfire, where she delighted listeners with her experiences during The Great Depression and World War II. And a ghost story or two always found its way into the evening. Ruth never missed a Gene Watson concert accompanied by her grown children, where she made her way to the stage with a dozen roses. I guess one could say this is her Farewell Party.
Ruth will be remembered for her generosity and a compassionate heart. She was enjoyed by seven grandchildren, several great grandchildren, and a great great grandson, not to mention the number of people who claimed her as their own. She is survived by three sons and two daughters: John Carl Hite, Jeanie Mae Hite Reavis , Jeffery Porter Hite, Jerry (Jack) Clifford Hite, and Jan Ester Hite Nichols.
Miss Ruth we’ll see you in the sunsets, the trees, and mountains. You’ll live in the stories told around the campfires. You’ll never leave us. And that is the beauty of nature. Every living thing comes full circle. What dies out revives again in new life. She’s gone home to be with her Lord.
