Maryland (now a part of Annapolis) in a house his father built, on September 14, 1933. He lived
across the street from his Grandmother and down the block from his Aunts and Uncles for a few
years, but grew up on a 26 acre chicken farm just off Old General's Highway.
Ernie chose to enter the Air Force immediately after graduating from Annapolis High School in
1951. He trained as an x-ray technician and spent his active duty years in Roswell, New Mexico
(and another 20 years in the Reserves stationed out of Andrews AFB) eventually rising to the
rank of master sergeant. He came back to Maryland to work at Saint Elizabeths Hospital
(originally called "Government Hospital for the Insane") in Washington DC. There he met a
vivacious young secretary he would soon marry: Marcelene Delozier.
The young couple set up their household in Oxon Hill and had three children in short order:
another Ernest, Mari, and Cynthia.
Ernie joined the Federal Bureau of Prisons in 1964. His first assignment was to United States
Prison, Lewisburg (USP Lewisburg) where he worked in the prison's hospital. He served there 15
years before transferring to USP Atlanta in 1979. He retired as an Assistant Hospital
Administrator in 1984.
In retirement, Ernie could be found in his children's houses putting up walls, laying down floors,
and generally making any improvements or repairs they might need. If not there you would find
him at his church doing whatever needed doing, at MUST Ministries working for the homeless, or
traveling the nation to tour our coastal lighthouses
Ernie died on December 27th 2023. He is survived by his beloved wife Marcie; his children Ernest
(Kristeen), Mari Buche (Dann), and Cyndi O'Shields (Albert); his grandchildren Jennifer, Christy,
Kristy, and Karl; and his great-grandchildren Jackson, Jacob, Sammie, Lizzie, Liam, and Evelyn
Ernie will be remembered for his dedication to his family, country, and church community. A
loving husband, father, and friend, he will be dearly missed by all who came to know him
The family would like to thank Trisha and Joyce, and Patricia, Theresa, and Tina for the loving
care they provided Ernie in his last days.
