Born in Cherokee County, GA she resided in Marietta most of her life. She was the daughter
of late Lee and Ruth “Ruby” Garner. Helen was the epitome of a graceful southern lady.
Coming from an extraordinarily talented and artistic family, she was a lifelong lover and
patron of the arts and a devoted volunteer for the Georgia Symphony Orchestra where she
served on their board of directors and chaired the Women’s Guild from 1985-1987. She was
also a published poet and many have found joy or were comforted by her wordsmithing in
the form of notes and letters. Helen devoted most of her life to nurturing her family and
friends. She is survived by her husband, John T. Mackey, Marietta, GA; son Eric Bowles,
Marietta, GA; stepsons: Danny (Christine) Mackey, Canton, GA; Brian (Debbie) Mackey,
Kennesaw, GA; Scott (Tambra) Mackey, Kennesaw, GA; 7 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren;
brother Gary (Nancy Ann) Garner, Augusta, GA; 4 nieces and nephews. The family
will receive friends at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5 to 8 PM
and Thursday from 11:30 to 1 PM at John Knox Presbyterian Church followed by funeral
services at the church with the Rev. SheryLynn Frazier. Interment will be at Kennesaw
Memorial Gardens in Marietta. Memorial contributions may be made to the Georgia Symphony
Orchestra.
