James was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He served honorably in the United States Air Force before earning a degree in Accounting from the University of Alabama and building a decades-long career with United Parcel Service. After retiring in 1994, he founded three small businesses. In 2003, he was named Businessman of the Year by the National Republican Congressional Committee’s Advisory Council.
James had a generous and outgoing personality. He was a devoted member of his church, where he served as a deacon and choir member. His community involvement extended to the Lions Club and volunteer work at his local humane society. Traveling, golf, softball, and fishing were among his favorite pastimes, but time spent with family was his priority. All who had the honor of knowing James will cherish his memory.
James was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 66 years, Shirley Lane. He is survived by his brother, Bobby Gene Lane; his daughter, Cynthia Crowell (Ed); his daughter, Cheryl Braund (Rick); his son, James Edward Lane, Jr. (Janice); his daughter, Tina Lowe (Andy); his granddaughter, Emily Crane (Phillip); his granddaughter, Kayla Crowell (Benjamin King); his grandson, Thomas Crowell (Phuong); his granddaughter, Mallory Lane; his granddaughter, Avery Lane; and his granddaughter, Teagan Lowe.
A visitation for James will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2024 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Sandy Plains Baptist Church, 2825 Sandy Plains Road, Marietta, Georgia 30066. A funeral service will follow the visitation. James will be laid to rest at Kennesaw Memorial Park in Marietta. In lieu of flowers, contributions in James’s memory may be made to Sandy Plains Baptist Church, 2825 Sandy Plains Road, Marietta, Georgia 30066.
