

James “Doyle” Mathews, age 88, of Acworth, Georgia, passed away on February 8, 2026. Born July 5, 1937, in Birchwood, Tennessee, Doyle was known for his kind heart, quick humor, and joyful spirit. He never met a stranger and truly loved life, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he encountered.
Doyle proudly served in the U.S. Army before building a successful career in the floor covering industry as a business owner. He was admired for his strong work ethic and dedication.
He shared 54 loving years of marriage with his wife, Sue, whom he cherished deeply. Doyle enjoyed hunting and fishing, gardening, and playing pickleball, pursuits that brought him great happiness. He was also an active member of the Florida Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, reflecting his commitment to community and service.
He is survived by his wife Sue; his children Mark Mathews (Betsy), Mark David Mathews, Shannon Warner (Mark), and Deborah Lynn Ellis; his grandchildren Emily Poole (Ashton), Nick Mathews (Laura), Chandler Mathews, Madison James (Zack), Savannah Warner, and Cameron Ellis; and his great-grandchildren Jace, Ava, and Harper. He was preceded in death by his parents, W.C. and Verlia Kate Mathews, and his brother, Darwin Mathews.
A visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:30 AM, followed by a funeral service at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home, 2950 North Cobb Pkwy, Kennesaw, GA. Burial will take place at 2:00 PM at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA.
