April 4, 1939 – February 1, 2026
John W. Rucker Jr., a man of profound wisdom, unwavering faith, and a poet’s heart, passed into the arms of his Creator on February 1, 2026. Born on April 4, 1939, John lived a life that served as a testament to the power of steady devotion and spiritual grace.
A lifelong scholar, John graduated from David Lipscomb High School in 1957 and earned a Bachelor of Science from David Lipscomb College in 1962. Following a respected career with ACE Insurance Company, John dedicated his retirement to the things he loved most: his faith, his family.
John was a pillar of the Church of Christ community, serving as an Elder at Pitman NJ. Church of Christ for over 20 years and teaching Sunday School at Burnt Hickory Church of Christ until his final days. He also held Bible classes at Celebration Village. A favorite chapter in the Bible was 1 Corinthians 13. His spiritual life was harmonized by his love of music; many will remember the resonance of his voice performing in a college quartet, lifting praises in song.
Outside his life of faith & work, John had the soul of a pioneer. He was a seasoned traveler with a deep love for the open road and stories across the world, with travels to over 100 countries, 7 continents, including all 50 of these United States. An avid reader of Louis L’Amour, he emulated the values of the classic frontier: integrity, hard work, and a quiet but firm moral compass. This creative spirit shone brightest each December, when he would share his famous Christmas poems; verses that became a cherished cornerstone of the holiday season for his family and friends.
To his family, John was a "rock"; a sanctuary of steady calm. He moved through the world with a light that dispelled darkness, mirroring the character of his Eternal Father through his fairness and kindness. John loved his family & friends and stayed in close contact with all those he held dear. He looked forward to being with them in heaven.
John is proceeded in death by his father John W. Rucker & his mother Ruth Cunningham Rucker.
He is survived by his devoted wife of many years, Elanor Mae Spivey Rucker; his children, Jonathan Russell Rucker (Janet) and Cynthia Jo Rucker Cox(Keith); and a legacy of grandchildren and great-grandchildren:
Colin Jarred Rucker (Megan), and his children Grayson and Elizabeth.
Brent Michael Cox (Stephanie), and his children Sophia and William.
Ryan Taylor Cox (Amanda).
John was a good and faithful servant who loved Jesus and has now completed his final journey home.
