

Martha Bowen Thornton, 89, of Kennesaw, died Friday, February 13, 2015. Memorial service will be held Wednesday, February 18, 2pm at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home in Kennesaw with Pastor James Gwin officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 1pm on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, P.O. Box 78960 Phoenix, AZ 85062-8960 or mda.org.
Mrs. Thornton was an active member of Acworth United Methodist Church and a longtime participant of the Charlotte McClure Sunday School Class. She also was part of the Celebration Singers. Mrs. Thornton was somewhat of a pioneer for women when she ran for Probate Judge of Henry County, losing by a single vote. She did serve the community of Henry County as a Deputy Sherriff, a job not held by women years ago. She retired from the Federal Government as an office manager with the Defense Contract Audit Agency. Her passion for Ballroom Dancing earned her several awards in the Fred Astaire Ballroom Dancing Competitions.
Mrs. Thornton was preceded in death by her husband – Ernest (Bud) Thornton and her son – Charlie Bowen Thornton. She is survived by her son – Ernest (Buddy) Thornton of Kennesaw, brother – Johnny Bowen of Williamson, sister – Joyce Potochnik of Covington, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
