6 October 1925 – 5 May 2015
Mary was born in Atlanta, Georgia, the fifth of eight children of Paul Needham Whitley and Emma Ruth Henderson. In 1954 Mary married Augustus Chapman Orr and celebrated 30 years of marriage before he died. One daughter, Dee Herring, passed away in 2011.
Mary is survived by one sister, Cora Whitley Lambert; son-in-law Dennis Herring and his son Matthew (Ashley), stepdaughter Martha Orr, stepson, David Orr (wife Sylvia), nieces Merrill Grayson (John); Sandra Smith; nephews David Smith, Tommy Bond (wife Kayce), and Howard Smith (wife Terry). From the Whitley side of the family, survivors include nieces Gail Jett, Annette Whitley and Darlene Crabapple; nephews Eric Lambert, Tony Whitley, Lee Whitley and Wally Colly, and several grandchildren and grand-nieces and nephews.
Mary lived the last 19 years of her life in a senior residence in Acworth, Barrington Square. The family wishes to express gratitude to the manager and staff of the residence for the many kindnesses they and her neighbors showed to Mary. Our hearts are full of gratitude for the kind and tender care given to Mary at Tranquility at Kennesaw Mountain, the hospice where Mary lived the last three months of her life.
“Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” Matthew 5, verse 16
